When I first gave it a listen when I got it I felt somewhat disappointed and thought there was no way the album would continue to hold my attention. Turns out, I discover new songs everyday that I seem to like more and more. For example, when I got the album I didn't really like STB or Dirty little thing much, now I think they are fantastic songs. I thought the rockers all sounded too much alike, the more I listen though I realize they are what they are, and that is just balls to the wall rock n' roll. I loved all of the ballads from the beginning, and that hasn't changed. I am even more excited for the follow up album to see where they go as a band from here, because I really think this was a solid effort out of the gate, much more so now than I originally thought.

first 3 listens i hated this album and thought it was the biggest piece of shit ever. i was embarrassed to listen to it out in public.
then it became a good album where i liked most of the songs but i didnt figure id listen to it over a month or two
now 4 months later it doesnt leave my cd player, i dont get tired of it ever and i think it is one of the greatest cd's ive ever heard in my life
i love every song from STB to LTA and it is an amazing CD!

D- I felt that same way for some reason, It started out that I liked only a few songs, then it grew to a few more, and now I like them all. I wonder what it was that made the switch turn on that we went from not liking it too much to loving it. I posed this question because something tells me we are not the only 2 to experience this, as this album just keeps plugging along, and there are at least 2 more singles to come. I frankly think YGNR might blow up when it gets to that point, as I still think its the strongest song on the album.
It is awesome how people have embraced VR the way they have, and I think their sophomore effort is really going to grow on this. I am getting more and more excited about VR as time passes, which is just totally cool to be excited about a new band again.

most of my all time favorite albums i hated at first and they had to grow on me.
I think the reason Contraband is this way is because its a great, deep, different album
NO song on Contraband is easily digestible pop garbage.
Those easily digestible pop garbage songs on the radio u like immediately but they flame out quick and u get sick of after about a week.
I wear my CB cd out, i fuckin wear it out. when i go to my girlfriends house which is 3 hours away i listen to it on the way up there and back and i still never get tired of it, when im working out and exercising i listen to it, when im just crusin in my car i listen to it.
the melodies and lyrics are hard to comprehend on the first few listens but then its like after a few listens all the great melodies just pop out on u, slash's guitar is classic and never gets old or boring.
I can honestly say this cd is right up there as one of the best ive ever heard.

When you say you have grown to like the songs - what part of the songs do you like more now? the riffs, the lyrics, all of it?
I still think the rockers sound a bit too much like, but overall I like the album. I just dont love it.
One thing I have to ask you (since you started out in the same boat I did when you first listened to CB): What have you learned about Scott? What do you know about him now (through the lyrics) that you didnt before? Is there anything you can relate to?

The first listen of Contraband for me was of disappointment. I only liked a few of the songs, and those ones I did like I thought were great, the rest I thought was pretty average.
It took about 3 or 4 more listens until the melodies started to sink in and I was hooked. Not a day has passed since then that I haven't listened to the album, and also now that I've recently worked out a few more riffs (I've finally nailed the riff to Sucker Train!) I've fallen in love with the album all over again.

I loved it right out of the gate. But it's definitly different now. When it first came out I just loved hearing all of these great musicians who I had loved playing together making kick ass rock music. Now even tho I have heard it a billion fucking times I find myself once in a while listening to a track I havn't paid as much attention as some and saying "oh hey that's got a cooler guitar solo than I remember" and that leads to the weekly rotation of what my favorite track is.

I was disappointed that they seemed to try to hard not to make it sound like GnR. I wanted Slash to be more of himself with the blues based hard rock and not try to tone down the solos and guitar leads. But I love the album anyway and Scott is great and makes the album work. To answer your question I liked it from the beginning so I don't like it anymore but I haven't gotten close to sick of it yet!

Well I think that VR are trying to get a way from the GN'R sound to be their own band, but if you listen closely, there's allot going on guitar-wise and Slash does some really impressive guitar work on there.
And it's still blues based hard rock, but with a more contemporary edge which I really like.

I loved it the minute I heard Do it for the kids and headspace on that bootleg before the album even came out!

I think higher of Slash for sure, he's come light years as a player. The best work he's done since AFD IMO.
As for the record itself, I initially had it a 6+ out of 10. After multiple listens and a couple of live gigs, I'd rate it a bit higher. It's strongsuit still being it's focus.

I also thought the album sucked from the start, mainly the rockers. My opinions of the ballads haven't changed a bit. They are all great imo. I really like most of the rockers now. I do think that they should expand more on the next record and give some different feel to the rockers and maybe some more playing around with the guitar. Most of them still have that same feeling when I put them on. However, for a band that put out a record a year or so after they got together, I think this is a fantastic effort shown by the group. I can't wait for the new release.
