Found a head and an arm in the garbage can

« on: September 27, 2004, 10:19:08 PM »

Just had to get this off my chest.......

I can't fuckin stand emo!!! bands like Brand New, Punchline, Fallout Boy, Something Corporate, Taking Back Sunday, Dashboard Confessionals, Story of the Year, New Found Glory, The Starting Line etc....

They make the shittiest whiniest music in the world.  All of them sound exactly the same, dress the same and the singers are identical.  This is defienetly the worst trend in music in a fucking while, worse than pop, worse than rap because they pretend to be rock.  Emo is huge in college and college towns and I'm fuckin sick of having to hear people's shitty emo rock and them drone on and on about how hard these bands rock and are cutting edge...give me a break.

Please...feel free to back me up....or disagree and bitch me out

I agree. I find it less tolerable than nu-metal which I didn't think as possible. I've been listening to a lot of 60's and 70's music lately to escape from dull mainstream.

they have absolutely nothing to complain about. they should shut the hell up and enjoy their Lexus' while they have them. I basically hate any music that complains about life like they can't do a fucking thing about it.

Well, as part of what has unfortunately become the "emo generation", I might as well offer you my opinion, which is almost exactly the same as yours.  Emo bands are generally pretty lame.  The worst example in recent memory would be Brand New.  The thing that stood out to me was that they were basically just so...BLAND.  Their big hit single - I think it was called "Sic Transit Gloria" or something - had no discernible hooks.  I mean, it wasn't catchy at all.  Same for the rest of their songs, which all have meaningless Latin titles.  And yet these guys were all anybody in my class could talk about last year.  It was just, "Brand New are the greatest!"  But they suck so much...

I feel the same way about most of the other bands on your list, although I think Dashboard are okay (their songs are catchier than most emo bands).  However, I will say that most of the bands you listed have put out ONE song each that I really like.  For example, as much as I dislike Brand New, I will say that their song "Soco Amaretto Lime" is pretty good.  I really love Taking Back Sunday's new single, "A Decade Under The Influence", even though they didn't do anything for me when I saw them open up for Blink-182.

Dashboard Confessional stands out from the rest of those bands in that they have better hooks, better songs, better lyrics, and a more charismatic frontman.  That song "Vindicated" off the Spider-Man 2 soundtrack is a favourite of mine, and I always liked the song "Hands Down" - there's something very Brian Wilson-ish about it.

Still, lately I've started to be more accepting of emo simply because there's a new genre that's far, far worse.  Has anyone here ever heard of "screamo"?  That's bands like Alexisonfire, if anybody has heard of them outside of Canada.  Basically these are bands that seem to have roots in emo, but they have lead vocalists that mainly scream (and not in the good Ian Gillan way), they have a lot of showy guitar playing in the background, they have bad pseudo-political lyrics, and all the songs sound exactly the same - they have absolutely zero hooks.  I've had to suffer through a lot of these bands lately...Alexisonfire is really popular in Canada (and I don't know why), and when Sum 41 played my university during frosh week, the opening acts were two shitty screamo bands.

So compared to screamo, emo is fine; there's a few good tunes here and there.  But I'm glad that I'm out of high school, where everybody listened to emo, and in university, where it seems everyone listens to classic rock.

Yep, it's called screamo.  I found that out at last year's Battle of the Bands at my school, where I had to suffer through three screaming, tuneless Alexisonfire-type bands among the crop.  "What is that shit?" I asked.  "Screamo," someone replied.

Sum 41 during Frosh?  Is that Queens?

Oil thigh na'bannrig-hinn!  GOOOOOOOOO QUEEN'S!

....ahem.  Yeah, Sum 41 were doing this university tour at the beginning of the month.  It was a pretty good show.  It seems like they get more metal with each album.

Those bands aren't Emo. Emo = Emotional Hardcore.

It is not a new genre, the genre is probably older than most of you.

i realize it is. i know that it goes as far back as fugazi. it's just evolved and is all over the place now.

It's not evolved. How has it? When genres evolve, the description changes. If not, everything would just be call rock n' roll, no wait, music, no wait sounds...ect.#

The only problem here is we have high percentages of people who know fuck all about music, it's total ignorance. Same as what Hardcore has now become. People need educating about music.

Fugazi are post-hardcore.

Yeah, there was a handful of good songs on their last album.  They don't seem like they're Green Day rip-offs as much anymore.

So you're a smart motherfucker I take it... I'm probably going to be checking out Queen's sometime, one of my lady friends is going there now.  I just need a little bit of $ first.

ok, in my opinion, Taking Back Sunday, Brand New, and Thursday are legit, but i HATE Story of the Year, Good Charlotte, New Found Glory and Sum 41.

At least Taking Back Sunday, Brand New, and Thursday have meaningful lyrics and are clearly not wannabe punks like those fucking assholes in Good Charlotte. Good Charlotte make me laugh, they're like "yea, we're badass, we'are punk, thats why we play POP MUSIC!! LOL But anyway back to meaningful lyrics, ?a good example of utter shit  lyrics is New Found Glory, all they do is work on writing a catchy chorus, no matter how bad the lyrics are,  their songs are meaningless shit and have NOO substance whatsoever, not to mention the singer has NO vocal range and fucking sings like a whiney girl. Also, New Found Glory make the same album OVER AND OVER, they have shown no maturity at all.

I hated those three bands at first too, but my friend reccomended Brand New to me, and then? i got into Taking back Sunday, great bands.

The bottom line is these guys(TBS, Brand New, Thursday) can write meaningful lyrics and are expermenting with their sound. Brand New's first album was a generic emo punk album simply about explosive love, while their latest has shown maturity, with them singing about Date rape and cancer.

Emo's not so bad. I don't give the genre as much credibility as a lot of the bands perhaps desire, I don't own a single emo album, but I don't see why it's such a big problem to some people. "Sic Transit Gloria..Glory Fades" was, I thought, quite catchy and a very listenable tune, so I don't see what the problem about it is to whoever it was in this thread that complained.  If it did annoy me, I'd sooner shut up about it than focus any of my effort on complaining. It's just a genre of music, no big deal Undecided

Meh. Emo by it's general term can be annoying, but that's not to say you can define all bands by their genre.

I went to see The Used last Monday and they put on a cool show. Granted, I only decided to go on the day and had to tout my friggin ticket, but I enjoyed it.

Emo boys and girls (by what they understand by the term emo) can get on my nerves with relativly little effort...

...But oh well, so do a lot of people.

OH MY GOD!!!

Chris Misfit do you ever shut the fuck up?  Why can nobody ever be right?  Why is it that you have to always correct everyone and talk about how much fucking musical knowledge you have? I know what emo is, what it sounds like and what bands are classified as emo now.  I don't really care that you have a musical sub-genre for every single little band out there.  I mean, post hardcore? come on...you sound like an asshole.
