Tommy The New Slash?
«

Does anybody else feel that Tommy has stepped up to fill Slashs shoes in the band more than the guitarists have? Beside being one of the longest-running members, from the few performances Ive seen of the new GNR, he seems have the most charisma and chemistry with Axl. Its a connection that I dont see much with the other members. He seems to be emerging as the "other" personality in GNR...
Buckethead was the most adequate replacement for Slash technically, but he could obviously never serve the same role due to the fact that hes Buckethead. That intangible emotional connection that was present between Slash, Axl, and the fans just could never be possible with Buckethead...although his presence would have surely made for an interesting alternative. That anti-emotion would have worked in a bizarre way...Maybe hell come back soon
I guess that bond could exist with Robin Finck...I just dont see it. Finck doesnt have much presence to me.
Fortus is as charismatic as Tommy, maybe even moreso...But he seems more singular. Ive yet to see the same level of chemistry with Axl...and because hes newer and rhythm - the same level of leadership (although Tommys bio says hes lead?).
Of course its my belief that Slashs role in GNR is irreplacable...but out of everyone in the new band, oddly enough, I think the bassist has come the closest.

I always thought the same thing, they seem to be real good buddies at the shows.
Robin does have some of the chemistry, just check out the ending of SCOM at MSG and the massive grins they give each other, I think I read an article on the main site saying something about a friend of Tommy saying he was filling the Slash role, I just can't remember which article it is.

Don`t they call Tommy the General. He seems to be the link between Axl and the others, and orchestrates what goes on around him. I would argue that even Pitman has more presence than Buckethead. It doesnt seem like he`ll be back from what Tommy`s said.

Richard Fortus, the phenomenon

In my opinion, Tommy Stinson is like the spokesman of the band. But Richard Fortus is the new member who have the most important potencial of impact for the general public. I think that Richard Fortus has the potencial to become a worlwide superstar, not as huge as Axl or Slash, but he has a great potencial.
Richard Fortus has a phenomenal stage presence.

As u challenge every post i make i feel obliged to return the favour
Because Tommy gives interviews doesn't make him the 'other' personality in GNR - Dizzy has been giving interviews (and false release dates) for years - and without question he has the most 'chemistry' with Axl, after 14 years they are either really good friends or in love
because Axl seems to get rid of everyone else after about 5 years...
There is no 'other' personality in the new band close to the presence Slash had - its just some members enjoy being in GNR more than others and some (around the time they have shows/albums out
) decide to talk to the media more
Certainly Tommy is a 'visible' member of the band (unlike Mr Pittman....i'm still waiting for an interview with him or any sign of life at all....) but i wouldn't draw too much from a handful of shows (in which most of the band stand like statues) and a few interviews that coincide with his albums release.
I must say i like Tommy though - seems genuine enough.

I never included interviews in my reasoning...I credited it to stage presence.

But Dizzys a keyboard player, and even though hes probably closest to Axl, he can never have the same stage presence or performance chemistry with Axl as somebody who isnt at the back of the stage behind a keyboard.

I agree...I was just commenting on who comes the closest.? I would have clarified that even "closest" isnt remotely close to what Slash (or even Duff and Izzy) was, but I was trying to keep the negativity to a minimum.

I noticed this most during the Rio performance of "Patience".? I wouldnt compare the passion or intensity to Slash, but the interaction and chemistry was cool nonetheless.

Well, you know how we speculate that a big reason things are the way they are in GNR is due to legal problems/issues, right. Axl dissapears after the Philly no-show for months because of Clear Channel, and potential lawsuits, and many other instances...
That said, Pittman may be MIA because of a lawsuit himself -----> The battle over who is the real

Unfortunatley for Pittman, it does'nt look good

I don?t look for Slash in new GNR. If forced to, I must take robin for now.
The band structure of new GNR is, dear I say it, more like lil Beatles+ZEP.

Tommy's definately brings some much needed credibility to the new line up, he's a respected guy with the track record to back it up.

He [Tommy] seems to be emerging as the "other" personality in GNR...
I guess that bond could exist with Robin Finck...I just dont see it. Finck doesnt have much presence to me.
Later on you said that you're forming this opinion based on the live performances you've seen. I dont disagree with you, but I think appearances can be deceiving. Robin's strange appearance might be masking whatever chemistry and emotional connection he has with Axl. I cant speak for the others (Fortus, et al) - they just seem like satellites revolving around Axl.
Is Robin the only one who's not currently doing anything extra while in GN'R? I dont recall any remotely recent interviews from him other than the damage control statement he made for the Lisbon cancellation. Dizzy tours with his own little band, as do Tommy and Fortus. For this reason I feel that Robin is the 'other' personality of the band. A silent personality more along the lines of Izzy, rather than Slash. Remember Izzy did not have incredible stage presence either, but his influence on the music is undeniable. I think this is important - in my mind Axl doesnt want another Slash figure in the band (someone as dominating on stage, I mean), but I do think he's looking for another Izzy. He has searched a long time.

I'd say Tommy is probably the closest equivalent to filling Slash's role in the chemistry of New GN'R. But even after New GN'R makes it big, I don't know if we'll be seeing him with the kind of celebrity power that Slash built up in Old GN'R.
Tommy seems to be in line with Axl's creative direction, is obviously a huge musical talent, and doesn't appear to be the kind to start a lot of shit. I see no reason why he would not stick around for the long run. I think it's the same way with Robin.
