i just put a system in my truck and noticed that the sound quality is alot louder and fuller when i play newer cds. i had to turn the volume up like 5-7 clicks when i swithed from the new rancid cd to UYI ......axl probably wants as big of a sound as possible....maybe he wanted to wait till recording tech. was up to his standerds back in 1999?...

I think they had to learn new things in order to achieve what they wanted in the studio. Computers etc.

Yeah, since Axl is now producing CD he`s been reading the owner`s manual for the studio equipment for several months.

Volume level set to the CD just depends on the mastering of the disc.

Actually all gnr cd's i think are well mastered. I don't know what kind of cd player you have but mine cranks them at the same level as let's say a remastered cd.

Open the book? The book is full my friend.
This one will have to be written on a bit of paper and stapled to the back cover.

Umm , you may be closer then you think with this thread title .. your post seems off mark , what with talking about "volume" and all ..lol . but I think the ability to just A/B so many different instruments and parts and whatnot because of the unlimited number of tracks todays pro tools rigs allows may have a hand in hindering a quicker release.
How many hours do you think has been spent with the crew saying "now this part goes nice with this part but if I raise the meters on THIS part it goes much better with THIS lick robin did in 99 but if I raise THIS meter with richards part from last week it meshes well with what Bucket laid down a couple months ago"
ya know?

i agree with saul....to the title of this thread, my answer would be a "probably". the recording of music has changed a lot in recent years. i just started really getting into recording lately especially the production end of things and with the programs out nowadays (protools etc), there are just an unlimited amount of choices. someone like axl who is known to be very much the perfectionist, simply has no boundries when it comes to the sound of this album. infinite amount of decisions are made, volume being one of the basic ones, but it goes way way deeper than that when it comes to production and editing. this was not the case with analog recording or the beginnings of digital recording at all. so yeah, in a nutshell, i would say that recording technology has a lot to do with why this cd is so delayed.

I don't see technology as far as advancements being the problem per se as I could see it being a problem finding a way to mix the album to Axl's liking.
