I wish the new GN'R would cover this song on a world tour with an album called Chinese Democracy out.

Chinese Democracy Is Coming Some Day!!!

« Reply #41 on: August 27, 2004, 05:32:25 PM »

The Strokes arent that bad. I rather listen to them than any of the other "New Rock".

Also I rather a rock group do a cover of a Guns song than the rapper who is redoing WTTJ or whatever it was he's doing.

The Strokes are one of the most farcical bands I've ever seen come down the pipe....They are affluent, priviledged, privately educated guys posturing as lower east side trash, looking as if they had just emerged from a dump...GNR LIVED the life....The Strokes are emulating it...The music is modular...every riff in every song could easily fit in any part of any other song...The Melodies and progressions are all exactly the same....Holy Christ!!  No kidding, Lou Reed singing through a processor....fuck the strokes and fuck their dim-witted fanbase....more power to em.....

The fact that you find that to be important speaks volumes.

I can totally see why that's important. He's making the observation that guns looked the way they did from actually living like that and the strokes are trying to throw some image at you.

Whether you like them or not, The strokes are one of the most popular rock bands right now. They are heavily influenced by GNR. I'll be looking forward to hear their particular version of NR.

Volumes about what?  The fact that I appreciate a bit of substance to the artists I enjoy as opposed to some contrived retro effort to shift albums?  The fact that you decided to isolate that part of the post instead of my criticism of the actual music must be speaking volumes as well....All in all, it's just another reason to view them as insignificant in my eyes, that's all.

Enough of the anti-The Strokes posts. Seems like everytime an artist mentions GN'R or covers a GN'R song, we get the same "that band sucks" posts.....  Roll Eyes

Jarmo, give me a little more than that here, ok?  My dislike for the band has very little, if anything, to do with the GNR cover.  I could give a fuck if they were covering GNR, Slayer, or Charlie Parker...I believe I'm entitled to post my views on the band without having it explained to me why I see them the way I do.

The fact that GN'R LIVED the life, as you put it, is just one of many things that made them the greatest rock 'n' roll band ever.  However, note that I said "one of".  Good tunes were another, and as far as I'm concerned, The Strokes have those in abundance.  They're one of my favourite current bands.  Their songs are all so catchy and so unpretentious, it seems like good old fashioned rock 'n' roll without trying to be, like Jet.  Songs like "Last Nite", "Someday", "Hard To Explain", "12:51", "The End Has No End"...they're just catchy, melodic rock that you can have fun with.  And I like that.  So they have similar melodies and progressions?  You could say that about any number of bands, like AC/DC, the Ramones, Motorhead, and all blues bands.  The Strokes are less so than any of those groups in that regard; their songs have variety.

You know, people always say that the Strokes are ripping off the Velvet Underground.  But I listened to this Velvet Underground CD once - I think it was the one with "Candy Says" on it - and it was nothing like The Strokes.  It was just slow and boring, with a lot of artsy pretentions and stuff.  Maybe Julian Casablancas sounds like Lou Reed, but he's infinitely more fun and charismatic to listen to.  The Strokes are a great live band.

OH NO that would be horrible.
By the way has anyone heard Avril Lavigne version of Knocking on Heavens Door i can truly say that he raped that song.

I guess I'm the only one here who likes Avril Lavigne's version of KOHD.

Can't wait to hear what the Strokes will do. I enjoy some of their music.

I could give two fucks about image. We obviously listen to music for different reasons. Besides, have you even listened to the music? GNR (in the 80s) sang about gritty street stuff etc., but The Strokes have never tried to pull that off. So they dress a certain way? Get a life.

Read my previous post. As for substance, if you can't get any from The Strokes, well that's just your problem. I've been able to get a lot out of their music and lyrics. Now is this conversation interesting? Is it going to lead anywhere? Doubt it.
And I don't see how them being retro takes anything away from the substance.

The reason I didn't comment your views on the music is that I partly agreed with them. Yeah, the songs are very similar. Still love it though.

Errrr i don't like the sound of this. I see November Rain as the legacy GN'R left and i never want it touched by any band.
