Listen to yell before the solo on WTTJ. Then try to do it. Axl had a sick amount of range. Now tho Chris Cornell seems to be the popular choice on thsi thread, and I have to agree. He can do it all. Steven Tyler still has his voice after all these years. I wonder how he conditioned himself to be able to do that or if he is just lucky.

Axl is one of the greatest vocalists,  but a few have him beat.

Freddy Mercury - Even Axl would admit that.

Sebastian Bach - He has great range, more than Axl, but kind of a screamer. From a creative standpoint though, Bach still sings the exact same way he did in the `80`s. I give credit to Axl, his singing style has changed over the years, but he is still unmistakably Axl.

Axl can have is days where he has nailed it, but others where he was below par ( 2002 VMA`s)

To the other end of the spectrum....Scott Weiland can not compare. Sure he sounds great on the VR CD, but live he is awful.

Mike Patton has the best voice in the world IMO

and he was offered the job in VR but refused crying

really..I didn't know that!

He was offered an audition and refused, not the gig itself.

There is something about Jim Morrison's voice...

Morrison  love

(Axl's) singing style has changed over the years, but he is still unmistakably Axl.
That is the thing with Axl's voice...
its uniqueness....

I love Axl's voice itself...
not even going into vocal range, style, etc...
Just the quality and tone of his voice itself...
When he sings of course many things come into play...
but even when he speaks.. just his natural 'speaking voice'
Something very appealing about his voice to me...
comforting... exciting... and the ladies will agree with me I'm sure...
something oh so sexy about his voice
Its personal taste and in the end it is just what appeals to the listener's ears
Axl has something that obviously appeals to a very broad range of ears...
(on top of all the other qualities that make him so exciting and entriguing)

Its a voice...
one of our most personal attributes
he's been blessed

All guys I like just as much as Axl. Maybe they are not technically better in range and such but I love their voices

fuck I forgot to mention freddie mercury. THAT was a voice man. He really could scream out a hard rock line on some songs and carry the piano rockers all by himself. I wish he was still around.

in his prime Axl Rose was by far the greatest rock n roll "screecher" of all time

Yeah, his screeching should be his trademark. Once you hear it, you know who it is.

Patton has made a career of avoiding mainstream rock for the most part..... pretty much blatantly
He was offered the spot to sing for Inxs too after Hutchence died.....  he turned that down also

Check out their appearances on Leno or Letterman from a month or so ago. Scott just wasn`t hitting the notes. (I`m sure they`re floating around somewhere you can download) Also have seen a few clips of them live. Seems like he has more bad days than good days live.

Shannon Hoon. Tragic loss to the music world.

Robert Plant.... still sounds good, but he doesn`t have the vocal range he had back in the Zeppelin days.

as frontman, Axl Rose is one of the most genius of all time, but as a singer, I gotta make a list about "who is better":

Sebastian Bach
Bruce Dickinson
Jonnhy Solinger
Mike Pathon
Robert Plant
Steven Tyler
Jorn Land
Freddie Mercury
Justin Hawkins (I'm kidding... rofl hihi rofl)
.
.
.

But take a general vision, I think Axl is so mutch better then all of these guys I said before (except Robert Plant, Sebastian Bach, Steven Tyler, Bruce Dickinson, Freddie Mercury and Jorn Land)

If you listen to most of Mike Patton bands like Fantomas and Mr. Bungle, you can understand why Patton turned down VR.  Pattons music compared to VR is a completely diffrent monster.  Mike Pattons voice is almost an instrument in itself with some of his bands.  Its easy to think of him as a one hit wonder(epic), with a nasely voice,  but his voice has significantly changed since then.  This dudes got some fn pipes.  Check out some later FNM, as well as Tomahawk and Mr. Bungle to see his vocal progression.
