« on: July 26, 2004, 03:09:15 PM »

Hey I just got my billboard book of facts. I love this damn thing.

i will do extensive stats for everyone if they request but here are the songs that made the offical top 40 charts in the U.S. and the peak position it made it to, in order of appearance.

Sweet Child O' Mine - 1
Welcome to the Jungle - 7
Paradise City - 5
Patience - 4
You Could Be Mine - 29
Don't Cry - 10
Live and Let Die - 33
November Rain - 3

(You can see the Nirvana kill around you could be mine came out in July of 91')

Ballads were the biggest sellers before Nirvana came along and Metallica started recording pop songs  hihi

Nirvana only had one top ten hit.  The reason GnR's songs didn't chart as high on the Illusions is because they weren't as catchy as the Appetite singles.

But 29 for a rocker like You Could Be Mine is extremely impressive.  In comparison, the Red Hot Chili Peppers "Give it away" only made it to like number 70.

It's getting harder and harder for a rock song to make it onto the top 40 which is dominanted by RB and Rap. So those numbers arent too bad, considering if they were released today they might not crack the "Top 40"

Wow! I cant remember whether it was either here or in the UK where I was at the time, that YCBM was in at Number 2, and I think also KOHD.

Yesterdays, Civil War or Estranged didnt make it?

Of course Estranged and Civil War didn't make the top 40, but I have them and that's all that matters Smiley

I despise Rap and R&B. Those numbers should be so much higher.....Estranged not even up there

There's a young generation in the  US that wants to here rappers talk about all their "bitches" "hoes" and their cars. Driving around with their subwoofer cramming th bass out loud, The generation that would rather see a band play instrument together and make great music is a minority. That's why VR can be at #1 on both rock charts and not even crack the Top 40.

For a rock song to make it into the top 40 it has to have really massive appeal remember that making it into the top 40 requires competition with songs by people like Madonna, Michael Jackson, and all that in this case since UYI was 1991.  You have to have a really catchy song to be in the top 40.  Sweet Child Of Mine, Paradise City and Welcome To The Jungle were all really really catchy songs.  Especially Sweet Child and Paradise are some of the catchiest rock tunes ever.  Even people who don't like GnR like those two songs and November Rain.  So that's why they made the top 40.  I'm certain Guns had a lot more songs that charted high on the rock charts, but to crack the top 40 overall most of the music there is really simple and mindless stuff with a few good songs scattered throughout, it's no wonder that Estranged or Civil War never made it.

Thank God Estranged never made it, I wouldn't want to see that song get played out. I like it as sort of a hidden gem.

Yes, the appreciation of songs like Estranged and others are kind like added rewards for real GnR fans

Interesting numbers.

I'm surprised that Jungle and YCBM didn't go higher than they did.

Well, Jungle was their first single, so it came before SCOM which is what really broke them so nobody realy noticed it except the metal heads.
