Is it a kind of "cold war" between Axl and Geffen?
- Axl needs geffen to release "chinese democracy" because this is a very famous record company with a lot of money.
- Geffen needs Axl and the name "Guns n' Roses" because it adds credibility to have a legendary band and a so big record sellers for your company. It brings money.
Don't you think they need each other?

Record Companies vs. the artists..... the artists need the labels money to get the exposure. But the labels also need the artists to rip-off........
Does Geffen need GNR? Certainly not - their stock wouldn't drop a cent by letting them go

I disagree, GnR could potentially make Geffen/record company millions of dollars.
If you mean if they need GnR to survive; course not. Then again i dont need a million dollars, but i wouldn't turn down the oportunity to win that money.
Theres no way Geffen would let GnR go. If the reports on the money spent on CD are true ($10m) i'd even go as far as to say that the confidence shown by the record company towards Axl + GnR is second to none in music history with regards to cost\timeframe.

GNR is more important to Geffen than vice-versa, IMO. But then again, I don't know if many more record labels would put up with all the shit that comes along with GNR...

The record companies need Acts to rip off to make money.
If axl doesnt put out CD, who knows maybe they will put out a live concert DVD or cd, or release a second Greatest Hits, or something. They will recover there investment

Beck, Bloodhound Gang, Cold, Counting Crows, Days of the New, Depswa, DJ Lethal, Peter Gabriel, Guns N' Roses, Nirvana, Rich Price, Rooney, S.T.U.N., Sonic Youth, Truman, TRUSTcompany, Weezer, Rob Zombie......
Those are the acts signed with Geffen. I'd say that Geffen needs GN'R a hell of a lot more than GN'R needs Geffen. Chinese Democracy will outsell any new album by any of these bands without a doubt.

Chinese Democracy is definitely one of the most anticipated album of these last years, and maybe of Rock History. I really agree.

I totally agree with you here. I mean I have never ever heard of another album being this anticipated, except maybe the Illusions. And whats odd about it is that, there really hasnt been any promotion of the record, mostly just in 2002, and that wasnt even a lot. I think its because its such a mystery, and kept such a secret, b/c no ones knows anything about it, and the small number of people who do cant say anything. So thats why I think its so anticipated.

With Interscope owning geffen - I doubt they need the Geffen wing to pick up the tab with artists like:
2Pac, 50 cent, Bryan Adams, AFI, Audioslave, D12, Dr. Dre, Eminem, G-Unit, The Hives, MArilyn manson, Nine Inch Nails, Queens of the Stone Age, U2, Weezer and Rob Zombie
I see your point but this is a conglomerate -look beyond Geffen - it's just a name now.

Oh I'm not saying Interscope needs GN'R, but as far as the Geffen record label is concerned, Guns N' Roses is (or at least should be) their main concern and priority.

I would say 'Chinese Democracy' is the most anticipated rock album of all-time. There's such an unknown element about it, people are curious about what Axl has done and will still do...

Don't forget, Interscope is part of Universal Music Group, which owns ALL of the following labels:
Geffen Records
Interscope Geffen A&M
Island Def Jam Music Group
Lost Highway Records
MCA Nashville
Mercury Nashville
Motown Records
Universal Classics
Universal Records
Universal Music Enterprises
Universal Music Latino
Universal South
Verve Music Group
Bottom line, Universal owns a pretty large market shar of all major-label music/artisits out there today, they rake in more than enough to offset anything that CD has cost just one of their numerous sub-outlets. That isn't to say they wouldn't like to have it out, I'm sure they would...if only b/c of the beating-by-association they take in the press when Axl doesnt pony up. That being said, if they dropped Axl, he could esily release this on Sanctuary's own record label, and it will still sell huge because of all the myth around it (if he ever does release it). In essence, neither really need each other, but both benefit from the relationship if a product is ever produced. Axl gets the ad/marketing department push from a major label and distributor, Universal gets a guaranteed million copy seller, at the very least.

Not to mention Universal is owned by European Company Vivendi and used to be owed by Canadian alcohol company Seagrams...... funny to see how smaller the "band" becomes on the global spectrum of things...
" Universal Music Group (UMG) is the world?s No.1 music company. Its global operations encompass the production and distribution of recorded music on CDs, videos and DVDs, the licensing of music copyrights, music publishing as well as mail-order music/video distribution. UMG increased its global leadership in 2002 in a challenging environment.
"Present in 71 countries, UMG had 25.9% of the worldwide market (source: IFPI): in 2002, one out of every four albums sold worldwide was a UMG album ? over one in every four in the U.S. and approximately one in every three in France.
UMG is also the world leader in jazz and classical music with approximately 40% of classical music sales worldwide."
