Turn loose the swans that drew my poets craft...

« on: July 16, 2004, 03:02:16 AM »

I was just browsing the internet looking for GNR news and found this.

I don't even know if this has been mentioned before...

Judging from this site, Paul DeCarli has worked with major bands like Metallica, Kiss, Bon Jovi... and will now do (or has done) Digital Editing for Chinese Democracy.  He expects the cd to be released in 2004.

Take it for what it's worth, I just thought I would share this with you guys...

The link is: http://home.pacbell.net/decarlip/editing_resume.html

PS: Could someone explain what Digital Editing is, what does it do for the sound of a record?
Thanks!!

What is Digital Editing?

Digital Editing is the process in which the songs are.... well... edited. Sometimes after having the chance to live with a mix, you may decide that the song has one too many choruses, in most cases, this can be fixed in editing. Certain timing problems can also be fixed. These types of fixes are completely program dependant and will not work 100% of the time.

As a mastering engineer I prefer to do the song fades as opposed to having them done in the studio during mixdown. Fades can be extremely smooth when done in editing. I should mention that some mastering engineers do not like to deal with these types of issues. Many prefer to receive the mix master in the exact sequenced order with the appropriate amount of spacing between each cut. This is something you should ask your mastering engineer, as some charge exorbitant fees when editing. I have actually added instruments and vocals to final mixes during mastering on occasion, so many things are still possible at this late stage of production.

A little update:

I mailed Paul Decardi a few hours ago.

I asked if he could share anything about how it was working with Axl and such.

I was surprised to get a reply but not surprised by the answer: he is contractually bounded to keep his mouth shut.

Nonetheless it was nice to get a reply though...

Someone just tell me this - does editing come after the mixing? Is mixing complete before editing takes place?

If so..... then fuckin  ok

Another thing.....

He's the digital editor and thinks it should be out 2004. Obviously, this isn't random guesswork.

Anyone who thinks it's nowhere near done must now concede that it is nearly done, and it's not 'Axl's laziness' or 'unrecorded vocals' that are holding this up.

IMO ttheres a few scenarios that can take place regarding CD....

1) Tommy cuts his tour short and they release the album in NOv/DEC with a tour

2} Tommy continues with his tour but they decide they wont tour until next year and they release CD NOv/DEC...

3) They dont release CD this yr {most likely}

4) If thats the case we wont see CD till about MArch/APril.....  Sad

So basically this dude was just brought in to digitally edit a couple songs right?

Because as we all know, Slash said Axl only recorded vocals on 2 tracks and that he knew that for a fact.

Well, at least now we know a great amount of work has gone into making this a masterpiece, and it's not just Axl dicking around tinkering things year after year. Because with this news, and the news that that compose Marco Belstrami, or whatever his last name is, it's obvious that that $13.5 million from Geffen is being put to good use.

Why don't you shut the fuck up and realize that Slash knows hardly anything about CD?

I never get tired of this one.  One of the best running gags ever on HTGTH!

Editing usually comes after mixing, but there are cases where mixing is considered part of editing, as you can often use the same equipment for both jobs.

Sorry. Smiley

It does say something interesting on this site:

http://home.pacbell.net/decarlip/editing_resume.html

It says that it was last updated on 4/18/2004. I just wanted to bring that one up.
