The State of Music
«
on:

Well...I sit back in my chair this evening pondering what rock n' roll is right now with the words of some guy commenting on music and Gn'R relivancy to the 21st century (from BTM)
The guy said something to the effect that things have evolved since Axl was around and evolved even more from those things... and so on and so forth...
I was just wondering what all of your thoughts were on that....
What have we evolved into??? what makes a certain kind of music or band irrelivant to any particular time period?
Has this spurred any thoughts?

The current state of music is shit. It means it won't be fixed until a band comes along like GNR originally did in 1987 that kicks the dumbass record buying public in the ass and makes them stop buying said shit. Maybe it'll be GNR again. Who knows?

I hope so, as well...the only thing is that when i try to pop in Gn'R around the younger generation (I'm 21...feel weird saying that)...they scoff...they don't even give it a 15 second listen...a new younger Gn'R fan is hard to come by these days

I think rock lost two things.
THE FRONTMAN. Where are the new bands with a singer who can sing without being run through a computer (fred Durst). The guy who can sing, dance or what not and entertain.
THE RIFFS & CHORDS: It seems like there is no riffs in the "alternative" rock scene, and the chords they play are power chords or distorsted. They used to let notes tell the story and vibe of a song, now they let the Distorted SHIT tell a crappy story
(WHy is every song in rock today about Breaking UP)
There has been a few Rock bands that stand out nowadays,
THE DARKNESS, have some great guitar sounds and vibes
THe Vines, Have good slow rock songs.
Its funny when bands like DARKNESS come around people say how they sound like retro rock. Well I wish Rock had more powerful rock songs.
Look at Van Halen, GnR, ACDC from the Eighties They used their guitars and their songs relied on great guitars.
Look at Nickelback, Staind, LB they are all distored and it doesnt matter about the guitars anymore as long as the song is about some stupid break-up

Hell even MTV doesnt even play that much music videos anymore. What happened to the Day when it was almost all VIDEOS. If they played more videos they would have time to play a variety of rock and not just the stupid shit we are force fed

Most of the bands today are just not that impressive to me. It's been a while since a great, real rock band came along. There just doesn't seem to be the versatility out there anymore either. Groups often pigeonhole themselves into one category and they don't make music that varies. A group like GnR could do many different styles of music and they were great at all of them, nobody out there today can really say the same. The best bands are either the ones that have been around for a long time already, or groups formed out of bandmembers from broken up bands that were real good.

That's true, it happens to every generation and it's starting to happen to ours. I remember hating when my parents complained about how they don't make music like they used to, now I do the same

Even with rap, the music was a lot better about 10 years ago than it is now. Almost every rapper I hear today is terrible, they are all talking about meaningless bullshit. A decade ago, they were actually saying something worthwhile. The same thing can be said for rock in a lot of ways.
I think much of it has to do with the overcommercialization of music in general, it's become more of a business than an artform as the years progress. Labels are in many cases only handing out deals to the people they think will sell, not people who have something important to say or who have a style that's really different from what is popular at the moment.

I think the music industry has made it too easy to make it.
Almost anyone can make it nowdays so we get fed shit by countless untalented bands and artists. And we hardly get a quality group anymore cos it's all saturated with this shit.
But i always say, if ur music is good enough u can change anything.
GN'R will do that again.

But yeah, there's no in your face-real-outstanding frontman anymore. Rock & Roll needs to bring that figure back.
As for Guitars, well, the new metal scene / the bands you've mentioned, don't have any lead guitars. The guitar is just a part of the rythm section, it sounds like a distorsted bass. The figure of a lead guitarist i.e Slash, Eddie V H, Angus Young is gone.

Because they're all mindless sheep who won't listen to anything that's not currently popular and all over TV and radio. I'm 16 and have liked GNR since I was four. My parents didn't let me watch MTV until I was 9, and though I'm pissed off about that for a few reasons, at least it helped me keep my attention span and memories of when music didn't suck, which in turn helps me actually enjoy real music.

I defiantely think that Chinese Democracy could have appeal to younger people. I mean I've watched a few shows from the US Tour in 2002, and I see a lot of younger people in the crowd. So I wont count out the younger generation, a lot of them like GN'R.

I read this article in polish press, where it was said, that old guys(like 30 or 40, they are even called somehow, I don't remember) are buying new bands and they like it. You knokw why? Because new bands plays music the way Stones, or Cream did, thought it sounds new and fresh, thought it's the same.
And yes, there are no heroes today. There arew no frontmen, no great players, no breath taking lyrics. Even underground sucs, 'cause they always try to proove, thought they say - they don't.
But look around, I think the last personality was Axl...okey, fine, then Cobain, but that's it. It's the same with the movies actors, directors.
I think it also about music industries. They were always greadie bustards, but look what internet revolution did. People don't buy as much LP as they did, they have it somewhere on the PC, and they can't feel or concentrait on that right. For me, buing every new album, was something special, I've been always celebraiting this moment. Now, pepople dwonload only one song, that means - they know shit about the band and they unable to make new heros from the band.
Cheers

It seems as if everything has come full circle. Hip hop has just about run it's course, boy bands are gone, female pop singers like Britney and Christina have seemingly faded away, and rock is in a pretty piss poor state. There's something in the air that says people want something new, something to come out and kick ass.

I'm not saying the Vines are anywheres near as good as the old 80's bands.

Yeah there is no powerful singer who's presence alone and ignite a whole arena.

Yes they just use it to keep a simple beat, rather then make great music
