1- Hendrix (no doubt about that)
2- Slash
3- Clapton (listen to Layla and other love songs. It's his best CD ever)

After that, i don't care... Maybe Ray Vaughan, Page (but i don't really like him), i like Fruschiante... Hammett is crazy... Gilmour (so good, listen the solo of confortably numb...).

Well that's it

Not necessary the list of technically best players but IMO here's a list of players that have mostly influenced other people to pick up a guitar and start playing:

Slash
Ace Frehley
Jimi Hendrix
Eddie Van Halen

Joe Satriani.  The man is a freaking Guitar God.  Hell, he TAUGHT Steve Vai (my vote for 2nd greatest guitarist, btw).

Steven's drumming made the band; he made a big musical difference.  His sense of swing was the push and pull that gave those songs their feel, afterwards, nothing worked. ~ Izzy Stradlin

Slash is good, I'll grant you, but he's not as good as Satch (Slash isn't as good as Vai, either).  Vai is ALMOST as good as Satch, but even he's not quite there. Satriani, until someone comes along that can change my mind, is, for my money, the best ever.  I ain't seen no one, nowhere, who's as versatile, as talented, or as technically proficient, as Satch.  You can argue that he's not the most "passionate" player on the planet, I guess, but I still think he's the BEST player on this green and blue planet.

Oh, and for the record, for me:
3) Jimi Hendrix
4) Jimmy Page
5) Eric Clapton
6) Brian May
7) Slash
Cool Eddie Van Halen
9) Kirk Hammet
10) Dave Gilmour

Honorable Mention: Carlos Santana

I dont think slash is anywhere near as good a technical player as Vai, but IMO some of his melodies and riffs are just sheer brilliance, so Slash gets my vote.  But i was under the impression that Vai was a more technically proficient player than satriani anyway, i read a quote where satch said "i find it very hard to play the guitar".  If he finds it hard, the rest of the world has no chance.
By the way, did anyone know Malmsteen was completely self taught? I read this recently, and i was speechless, hes fucking amazing.
