Anybody debuting at #1 is a major accomplishment, especially for a band making its debut album. Only time will tell if it conitinues to sell, but you can't argue that it would the best possible scenario to start things off.

Actually, to my knowledge TSI did chart fairly well.
I'm not sure about it hitting number 1, but GN'R were still really popular in late 1993, regardless of grunge taking over.
Maybe GN'R were still popular in Australia when TSI was released because they played the biggest concert ever staged in January that same year.
Anyway, I hope Contraband does hit number one, there's way too much sh*t in the charts lately, it'd be nice to have geniune rockers in there.

Another mention on Hits Daily Double:
Next week, it?s time for RCA?s rockin? Velvet Revolver, which sets up an interesting battle between the ex-Guns N? Roses and their own greatest hits album.

I believe it debuted at #3, going on to sell over a million records (its only certified platinum).

Thats true...after all, "November Rain" exploded only a year earlier. But in the presence of Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, etc. (all bands that had exploded with huge-selling CDs) they were no longer
the
band anymore. And of course,
TSI?
as an all-cover album isnt the same as a
UYI
follow-up, but it was still new GNR material when released when they were still huge.
Also, Karts on VRforum.com claims that "Slither" is number one on Active Rock, #2 on Rock, and #3 on Alternative Rock charts. Didnt see a link or anything, so take it for what it is.

I'm afraid Contraband won't be taking No.1 place in Finland anytime soon as the Finnish Idol winner Hanna Pakarinen released her debut album the same day today (09.06.04)

I will admit it. I was predicting under 100,000 at first, then recently changed my opinion to 100,000 to 150,000. If they sell over 200,000, that will be something. Jane's only sold around 130,000 in their first week. Even a fractured Gnr fan base is still very large. God knows, I hope they don't move to arenas before they come to Atlanta. Arggghhhhhhhhhhh.

IT will only be a major accomplishment if VR stays #1 next week when the Beaties album comes out.

Dave, you have to admit it is great publicity for the "Gnr" brand name. Period. It will help spike sales of the back catalog and the Greatest Hits. This is VERY good for the redheaded stranger. I'm telling you, soon really needs to be the word and I just have a feeling we are going to hear something within the next month. It truly is a perfect time.

Even a fractured Gnr fan base is still very large.
When I went to Tower Records yesterday, I overheard a number of people mentioning AFD as they stood in line to buy Contraband. It was probably the largest congregation of old Guns fans in quite a while
I also noticed high schoolers buying the album (the Limp Bizkit generation)... which leads me to conclude that RCA has done a great job in promotion.

Vr has a fan base of 1 great band and 1 very popular and successsful bands of the 90's,,,,
Combine the gnr fans with the stp fans you have a huge headstart.
Again same with gnr when they release their album. It means nothing. The hype, name, people involved alone will generate a top debut spot....now lets see how long it lasts

Come on, it's a nice little accomplishment either way you look at it. I expected it to do fairly well, but this even shocked me. Let's face it, this type of rock hasn't been popular for quite some time. It's nice to see the people are responding to it fairly well. VR and RCA did a magnificent job of marketing it to those who are tired of the cookie-cutter style rock that has been hitting the mainstream. This band is turning heads everywhere.
I bought the disc at my local Tower and it was definitely selling hot there. My cousin works at Tower and had to keep re-stocking the shelves and they re-ordered more copies.

That's pretty cool.
I was fearing people would get tired of them with all that promotion going on.
I wonder how it's selling over here in Europe since the promotion seems a bit less intense here.

I have a second job at a liquor store in Providence. Right next to the store in the plaza is a Strawberries (that's a record store in the north east of America - not sure if its a national or international company). I went to work early so I could go buy the album. When I got there, the sales person told me they had just sold their last copy. I asked how many copies they had order, and he said they had only ordered a case of 100 because they didn't anticipate that demand would be so high. They had already placed a reorder.
Needless to say I had to travel this afternoon to another store to get my copy. My guess is that this album will definately outsell the GH and will explode when/if VR release FTP as a single with a killer video to accompany it.

It isn't really
that
surprising given all the hype (they've been in just about every music magazine over the past two months, and EVERY guitar magazine.
And considering how well the GN'R GH did, it would be embarressing if it didn't stay at #1 for
at least
two weeks. GH is still charting top ten in the UK.
