"Spectacle"s actually become one of my favorite rockers, and Im surprised that more people dont like it.  The ascension of the chorus is somewhat similar to "DIFTK," but the melodies are distinct.

The weirdest thing on this song is that c-part after the actual chorus ("living, taking chances..."): every time I hear that part, it reminds me of Linkin? Park!

Ugh, don't say that.... that's my favourite part of the song.  Lips Sealed

Booker, I agree with you.  Spectacle has become one of my favorites.  When I first got this album, as I stated on around the first page of this thread, Superhuman was my dark horse.  It is a great song, and actually like the rodeo, rodeo, rodeo part.

My favorite Rockers.

Dirty Lil Thing
Headspace
Sucker Train
Slither
Spectacle
Illegal I

Ballads

YGNR
Sometimes
Falling

Fillers, but not bad: Do it for the kids and Big Machine

Great album, but Dirty Little Thing just rocks so damn hard, as well as Headspace.  Does the riff in headspace remind anyone of pearl jam.....even flow?  whatever, it ROCKS!!

Great album!!!  By the way, Matt Sorum's drumming has improved sooooo much.  He did a hell of a job on this album.  Way to go Matt!!

D, i am listening to it right.  it is growing on me.  it does kind of rock once it gets going.  just something about it annoys me in the begining.  not bad.  ends nicely.  Headspace and DLT is where the real rock is at.  Superhuman is just plaing adicting.

4. Illegal I Song

Great song, especially Matt shines on this one.

I noticed that also.

and BTW I become to like Spectacle also. expecially the chorus and the end of the song..same goes with Do It For The Kids, in the beginning I didn't like it too much.

Use Your Illusion I (1991)

« Reply #311 on: June 15, 2004, 11:51:51 AM »

Hello due to some personal issues it has been some time since I've posted here in this forum. For now I'm back.

I bought Contraband June 8th around 4 PM EST time.

I did this routinley, the first song that I listened to was Set Me Free, and then Slither offically.

After those 2 songs I went straight to Fall to Pieces. The song itself was not very strong at first but after a few listens it was alright.

I've listened to the CD a lot not and after any other thoughts of it. I've decided that it WAS NOT what everyone cracked it up to be.

IT is a great record but Slash's guitar work was a little lacking. It looking like they played too much Weiland in this, but I like the CD. It could of been better though. It sounds like the first second of Fall to Pieces is cut off.

In You Got No Right, their are lyrical errors from the book to the song.

The better songs off of Contraband are:

Sucker Train Blues
Spectacle
Fall to Pieces
Headspace
Superhuman
Set Me Free
You Got No Right
Slither
Loveing the Alien

All those songs are good... I like them all. Loving the Alien is a great song especially.

I like the CD a lot and it is the best rock record in the last 5 years at least... probably more.

Contraband is not what is was supposed to be because we are all starving for music. It is what it will sale. #1 is coming.

Fall To Pieces should not be the 2nd single. I was thinking more like Spectacle or Loving the Alien.

CONTRABAND!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cant stop listening to this CD...

Sucker Train Blues, Do it for da Kidz and Big Machine rock to open da cd.
I kinda dig Illegal eye but i always skip Spectacle I think its to generic so i go straight to Fall to Pieces which rules.
HEadspace and Superhuman are ok, then I go straight with SEt ME Free, YGNR and Slither...Dirty Little Thing has grown with each listen and Loving da Alien is really amazin  ok

Well, Amazon FINALLY got the damn CD to me (the white cover), and I just finished it earlier. ?Here are my song by song reviews, then the whole thing at the end.

Sucker Train Blues
Love Duff's opening bass part, the vocals are good except for the megaphone shit, Slash's riffs are really good; his solo is good though done in an atypical tone.

Do it for the Kids
The song seems mediocre until the "showtime for strangers" line, then it picks up with good chorus melodies and vocals, Slash's mini-solos and fills are really good, as is his closing.

Big Machine
Good intro, Scott wrote better lyrics here than the previous two, Slash's riffs are catchy if unspectacular.

Illegal I Song
Vocals that are the kind that grow on you gradually; awesome Slash solos.

Spectacle
Matt's drums are the first thing that stood out for me about this song, and that's a good thing, he really wrote some good stuff for this song. ?Very good vocals and melodies, Slash's fills are good and he tops them off with a nice solo.

Fall to Pieces
Just a flat out beautiful song; lyrics, melody, Slash's incredible solo and post-chorus solos, everything. ?Beautiful.

Headspace
The riffs sound too much like previous songs, ultimately very redundant. ?Some good vocals, Slash gives a good but unremarkable solo. ?Definitely the weak link of the album, at least upon first listen.

Superhuman
Cool guitar intro, better lyrics than some of the others, catchy vocals.

Set Me Free
What can I say about this one that hasn't already been said? ?Fucking great song all-around; vocals, riffs, drums, solos, everything.

You Got No Right
Scott's singing is incredible, an overall good ballad with a soulful Slash solo.

Slither
I love Duff's and Matt's bass/drum intro, perhaps Slash's best guitar solo on the entire CD, a very good song all-around.

Dirty Little Thing
Duff's bass line here really reminds me of "It's So Easy". ?Matt's drums are very good, the music flows fantastically, though the lyrics are not quite as subtle as the overall message indicates they should be.

Loving the Alien
Great vocal melody, Slash's pervasive background solos are beautiful, a very pretty song.

Bodies (Live)
I downloaded this one, and I like it. ?No real opinion other than that, since it's just a cover.

OVERALL REVIEW

I honestly do not know what the hell the people on the GNR forum were talking about when they say this album is uninspired; nothing could be further from the truth. ?These guys put everything they had into this record, and it shows. ?Better than any of the ex-gunners solo projects, this one really benefits from the synergy of such talented players. ?I think it's great they split the writing credits between all of them, because they all deserve it.

Who said there aren't many Slash solos on this record? ?A few songs don't have them, but Slash is all over this record. ?They are not as prominent as his GNR solos, but they are definitely there.

I will admit that the lyrics are lacking in places, though I think most of the people who don't like them are holding them to an Axl Rose standard, which Scott doesn't deserve, because...well, because he isn't Axl Rose. ?Even when the lyrics don't hold up to close scrunity, Scott's flawless and unflinching delivery of them makes the listener forget that.

Overall, I agree with a lot of you, this is definitely the kind of record that gets better with each listen, I could tell that from listening once. ?The only real criticism I have read so far has been (in one form or another) "but it's not as good as Guns N Roses!" ?Well people, that's because it's NOT Guns N Roses! ?It's Velvet Revolver, and they delivered one hell of a rock n roll record; the best of the past decade.

I give it a 8 out of 10. ? ok ? Cool

I just heard "loving the alien" for the first time on cd (not on 32k VH1 stream) and i have to say this is a great song. Best rock melody i have heard since Shangri-la-de-da. The rest of the cd sounds 10x better at the 568 bit-rate.

Big Machine
Good intro, Scott wrote better lyrics here than the previous two, Slash's riffs are catchy if unspectacular.

I disagree, I think Scotts lyrics are dull and uninspired on Big Machine and are much better on the other songs.
Repeating "it's a big machine" 50 times in the song kinda bugs me. I like the music though. Cool riff to jam on too.
