GNR FOREVER!!!! AXL'S THE BEST!!!!!!!!!

« Reply #500 on: April 19, 2007, 07:23:06 PM »

its a solid record, no doubt about it. i just feel they could have done alot better. i love stone temple pilots and of course love guns n' roses so i was expecting it to be of that level of quality. i just know the capabilities of these guys based on the GNR and STP records and Contraband fell flat compared to those past efforts.

but with that being said, people tend to forget that these songs were not written "together" with scott and the rest of the boys. slash and co. recorded tons of tracks from jamming before scott was even in the band, and scott just picked the ones he liked and sang over them once they chose him.

i love the band, i've seen them live, i just think they can/could do alot better. thats why i think this new record will be awesome and kick Contraband's ass.

Now that Libertad has been released, do you think it kicks Contraband's ass?

I think quite the contrary, Contraband kicks Libertad's ass. beer

lol. i'm still undecided about Libertad. Its okay i guess. i think Contraband beats it by a hair tho. Libertad was pretty dissapointing.

i was just thinking the other day, Scott Weiland kicked ass in STP, had some awesome vocal melodies, Slash of course was fantastic with GNR. u would think the combination of the two would make a really excellent band. but something just doesnt work between them. VR are an excellent live act but i feel in the studio they are mediocre with some flashes of brilliance here and there. i still think "Slither" is still probably the best song they have written and its a shame they never wrote something as hard hitting and memorable.

i think the bottom line is Scott was a better fit with the DeLeo brothers, just like Slash was a better fit with our friend Axl.

it just sucks so much when u know the awesome capabilities of these artists and they dissapoint you like this. VR is good band, but Slash and Scott are capable of much more than "good" y'know?

Nah, i thought they were both awesome, but Libertad is the slightly better one of the two, i love the songs 'The Last Fight', 'Get Out The Door' and 'Grave-Dancer' (amongst others)

I agree, for me Contraband was quite a bit better than Libertad.

The only songs I keep coming back to from Libertad are Gravedancer (and to a lesser extent The Last Fight) and Messages (which was only a b-side obviously - staggers me why as I love Slash' guitar work in it and the vocals aren't bad either).? Whilst those 2 songs I mention are softer more ballad style - I also like a more rocking ballsy/bluesy harder song too - which IMHO is lacking from Libertad and why Contraband definitely gets the nod from me as the better of the 2 albums.

I wonder how it would have done if they had gone with the working title...I had never seen this.

VELVET REVOLVER To Release 'Comrades' In April - Dec. 17, 2003

VELVET REVOLVER, the much buzzed-about rock group featuring ex-STONE TEMPLE PILOTS vocalist Scott Weiland, former GUNS N' ROSES guitarist Slash, bassist Duff McKagan, drummer Matt Sorum and guitarist Dave Kushner from Dave Navarro's (JANE'S ADDICTION) band, have set "Comrades" as the working title for their much-anticipated debut, tentatively due on April 27 through RCA Records.

At first I thought Libertad was the better album, but now I've been listening to Contraband again. I think what I like about Libertad is just how tight they sound.

How or why "Messages" wasn't on Libertad just blows my mind. Probably one of their best songs.

Contraband was more "into your face".

Libertad felt pretty Scott influenced.

Contraband wins in my opinion.

I think Messages wasn't on Libertad becasue they didn't want any 9/11 references. if they did put it on people would've said they using the tragedy just do make some "headlines".

That is stupid. "Messages" is fantastic. Could of been a big radio hit I think. Oh well. We'll never know.

It's my favorite Libertad era song.

Contraband CLEARLY was better.

Yeah. It came out like 5+ years after 9/11

So any sad song can be about 9/11?

Bumping this because I saw some of the people involved point out it was the 12 year anniversary of Contraband the other day.

I can't believe how many years have gone already since then.

I worked out last night to it.. still love some of those songs...a real shame we will most likely never hear them in a live setting again, for obvious reasons.

Always loved Headspace ...of the non singles.

Do It For The Kids is one of my alltime favorite rock songs.

Big Machine, Illegal I Song are other favourites. For me Scott owned that album,it has some of his best work there, imo.

Still love love love Dirty Little Thing.  Definitely my favorite CB song.  As JAEBALL said I cannot believe its been 12 years since this album was released.  I was living in North Carolina at the time.  I remember picking it up at Best Buy.  They had different color covers for CB right?  For the life of me I cannot remember which color cover I picked up.  The excitement around that band at the time of CB's release was great.  I saw them twice when they toured for CB and the shows were fantastic.  When they toured for Libertad the enthusiasm was gone from the crowd

Yeah I have a white cover at home...

I totally admit that my GNR fandom makes me biased with VR, because I didn't care for Scott prior to it... but Contraband was just a straight ahead kick ass record... still love it. The talk of GNR possibly covering Slither is so cool to me.

I can't believe how many years have gone already since then.

Yeah, I can vividly remember the tremendous anticipation for the record at that time.  I also saw VR live at one of the very first shows, before Contraband was released.  I remember the controversy over ticket scalping because ALL of the shows on their first tour sold out in less than one second.  There were no limitations on ticket sales for one buyer, so scalpers really fucked everyone and everyone ended up buying the tickets on ebay and paying twice the ticket cost.  But the show quality was outstanding and was definitely worth going.

I also bought Contraband with a white cover and still have it.

It's a shame how fast VR disappeared after that incredible initial promise and hype.  Unfortunately, Libertad was pure shit.

I think Messages wasn't on Libertad because they didn't want any 9/11 references.

I don't buy that.  Besides, it was on Libertad.... just not the CD release.  It was on the iTunes release.  It's not like they hid it, and a 9/11 reason doesn't make any sense.

"Messages" is fantastic. Could of been a big radio hit I think. Oh well. We'll never know.

It's my favorite Libertad era song.

Mine too.  It was likely left off the CD release simply because it sounds different than the rest of the album.  Of course, given how shitty Libertad was, that was a definitely a plus.   Tongue  Good song, and I concur that it could've been a single.
