I have 2 guitars in mind:The Ernie Ball MusicMan(A clone of Eddie Van Halen's Wolfgang for $200) and the Epiphone Special (Les Paul clone for $200). I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Have you got a link to the ernie ball? I haven't seen it...but I'd say it's probably better than the Epi special.

Yeah, the MM is faaar way better than the Epi Special. There are few guitars that can be worst than the EPI.
Go for the Music Man, dude, much much better!!

I recently recommend the Epiphone to a friend who was asking me the same question. I don't have much experience with the Ernie Ball. My first guitar was an Ibanez (a hundred or so more $ but more people didn't know how much it cost me which wasn't that much compared to some) and I wouldn't say it was a better quitar than the Epiphone, although, the top of the line Ibanez is considered to be quite good. If stage presence isn't the priority for you the Epiphone is the choice I would make.

I would look into lower end Ibanez's. Cheap Epiphones or Music mans are wastes.

If it's an option, I'd say save up a bit more and get a Shecter or a Dean. Shecters are incredible value for the hardware you get. ESP will only give you Tone-Pros bridges on +$3,000 guitars, and wouldn't even give you Grover even for a custom shop.
I'd take a $600 shecter over any Ibanez (bar the Jem) and any Epi, and almost any ESP. Upgrade the pups and you basically have a pro-level guitar.
I still can't understand why nobody talks about them.
