i agree with dragon..... its all in the kind of music... bands like GNR dont have complicated bass lines.... punk has even less complicated bass lines... and you can make some really kick ass fills with a bass!

also, if you can play like Colonel Claypool  [drooling] you're kinda good...

*ashamed* i play with a pick [confused]

Well, I  am a guitar player. But, by luck, I got a bass about  1 and half years ago.I have played bass in a band (true what you say about finding very easy a band that needs a bass player, Captain P?L yes).
I play with pick, (I feel more like duff playing with a pick Wink) probably because I?m already more  used to play with it, cause im a guitar player.
But you really need attitude to play bass yes!! beer!!

i "just" bought my self a new bass! Squire P-Bass.. it rocks Cheesy (and i forgot about this thread)

and i also bought myself a Behringer BX1200 combo amp! it rocks! and its cheap! and it rocks! can shape the sound however you fucking want!

as a bass player, how do YOU like the sound? the sound of metal or the really warm rich sound?

i personally use the warmest sound i can, mixed a litle with some treeble in there... i need to feel my playing. i like to feel the room shake! and my body quake Wink  ok

Bass is not as hard as guitar(obviously) 4 strings or 6 to learn?

I dont own a bass but everytime im in the guitarshops i always go plug in a play the display Bass guitars... I was able to play the SCOM bass line just in 30 seconds of sitting down the first time with a bass..

yeah bass players are full of attidute
look at
Rob Trujillo
Gene Simmons
Sixx
Flea
Duff
Jason Nestead

those are some bad mother fuckers in my opinion...

That is just about the most ridiculous thing I've heard on this board.

Bass playing can be easy yeah, but once you drop the pick and start really playing, it becomes a shitload harder. Out of the players you listed Flea can be called a bass player. Maybe Rob too, I'm not that familiar with his work. But you go and listen to Victor Wooten and tell me that is not as hard as Satriani's or Vai's or who ever's work on the guitar.

Besides. Ask any guitarplayer if they had their 2 highest string clipped off and if it would be easier to play the songs they've been playing now that they only had 4 strings to learn. Trust me, it is not.

No way is that shit easier.

It's hard as hell, playing like Flea is hard as hell to begin with.  If you could play slap bass with your first few times playing a bass, that would be phenomenal.

But you couldn't, it isn't easy.

I see I already have replied to this thread, don't remember doing it....but it's been months though Grin

bass players? yeah Ive got one of those wacky characters in my band.. yes

and playing bass is hard, maybe not to begin with, like "oooh I played an E!!! damn that was easy!" but you know, there are soooooo much more to learn than just doing the easiest things. it is that way with most instruments from my experience. ok

outlawaxl, you play guitar? or anyother instrument?

im sure a bass player can play the guitar intro to sweet child on guitar after 30sec.... so just 'cuz a part is easy dosnt mean the hole genre is easy...

playing AC/DC may be easy. but playing primus, maiden, metallica, red hot chilli peppers, queen of the stone age and such aint that easy....

and there are 5strings basses too....

by the way, slap bass is only cool for 20sec's... it get's boring and dull real fast. sure, you have to be good to do it, but i rather stick to my pick.... only use finger on slower songs like Dont Cry, Patience and that kinda songs... ok

I've been teaching myself bass for about a month now. I tend to find using fingers muchn easier than using a pick.

A lot of rock and blues basslines are pretty easy to learn, but many are often difficult to master (i.e. using hammer ons, pull offs, slapping and other techniques.

You can hear a lot of great Newstead basslines on the Black album (especially 'Sandman' and 'Misery') although yes, IT was often very difficult to pick out the basslines on most Metallica records. Actually, there is often the same problem on the Cliff Burton albums too.

I hate when people who play guitar say "I don't like bass, it's boring, it's piss easy"
Make them listen to Cliff Burton or John Myung and see what they think...

there's not only 5 strings, Les Claypool uses a 6 string a lot. Jeff Ament of Pearl Jam recorded 'Jeremy' on a 12 string bass.

and if anyone say playing bass is piss easy, tell them to download something live with Primus. they will probably realize soon after seeing it that what they before used to call bassplaying is the same as knowing a couple of chords on a guitar. peace

some bass is easy just like some guitar is easy

if u pick the root note only on bass its easy, just as if u play 3 power chords in a song on guitar

there is difficult bass lines there are easy bass lines

on my songs sometimes i really shine on bass and some i just kind of use the bass to give my songs a fuller sound and dont do much with it.

i love runnin through fills on bass in my songs, sometimes i try to use counter rhythms on bass to fit in with my guitar

i think its easier learning to play bass than it is guitar.

not saying bass is easy, but u can be a passable bass player and even join bands quicker than u could tryin to be a guitar player.

actually when i use to give guitar lessons, i would start the people out on bass just to give them a fill of playin notes and movin their fingers

they all learned guitar pretty quickly afterwards.
