Total Guitar (mag) Issue 119 Feb 2004

THE HOT 50
THE 50 GUITARISTS YOU NEED TO HEAR THIS YEAR!

WHO WILL BE THE GUITAR STARS OF THE FUTURE?  WHO?S DUE FOR A COMEBACK?  FROM BLUESMEN TO METALLERS, INDIE ROCKERS TO FINGERPICKERS, HERE ARE THE MOVERS AND SHAKERS WHO?LL ROCK YOUR WORLD IN 2004

VELVET REVOLVER
WHO: SLASH, DAVE KUSHNER

WHY: BECAUSE THIS IS THE ONLY GUNS-RELATED ALBUM WORTH BOTHERING WITH

Drug problems, drunk-driving arrests, rehab - the making of Velvet Revolver?s debut album hasn?t exactly gone smoothly.  Due for release at the end of April, with a European club tour promised for late February, the most hotly anticipated debut album in guitar-playing circles looks almost certain to be delayed.

On 14 December singer Scott Weiland was caught smuggling drugs into the rehab centre where he?s completing a six-month residential programme.  His previous arrest for drunk driving (he was arrested on 27 October - his birthday - after crashing his BMW into several parked cars in LA and attempting to flee the scene) meant that he was only being allowed out a few days* a day to work on the album.  He?s now on permanent ?lockdown,? with a court appearance for the drunk driving charge two days before Christmas.  Suddenly their only official release, Set Me Free, takes on a whole other meaning.  Slash is joined on guitar by ex-Wasted Youth guitarist Dave Kushner (who also appeared in Duff McKagan?s short-lived side-project, Loaded).  Let?s hope they can channel all this chaos and frustration into the music.
end
*that?s a typo in the mag ? it should read ?hours a day?

Gypsy note:  I don?t like that this writer felt it was necessary to insult another album that he hasn?t even heard in order to promote this album that he hasn?t heard either.  Maybe he felt he had to suck up to Slash because supposedly there?s gonna be a feature on Slash in the next issue.
