It's better to burn out than to fade away...

« Reply #200 on: March 18, 2004, 01:47:34 AM »

So much for the new GN'R.  Buckethead was THE new part of Guns N' Roses that really excited me, that made me feel like the new band could be a worthy successor to the old.  With his exit, all those hopes have gone out the window. I loved Buckethead...he was far and away the coolest part of the new GN'R.  Now it's back to being just Axl and a whole bunch of guys who aren't the original band.  I mean, sure, the new band has mostly got excellent rock 'n' roll pedigrees - except for Richard "N'Stync" Fortus - but they don't have anything to really draw attention to the new band.

Buckethead was an individual that really got people talking.  I mean, how many people in the 2002 tour came with KFC buckets on their heads?  That kind of fan reaction is something you don't want to lose.  Some of you have said that Buckethead made the new band look freaky.  Yeah?  They've already got Robin Finck, of the goth makeup, and a 40-year-old Axl with botox, braids, and massive sports jerseys.  I don't see how Buckethead could make them any less weird than they already are.  If you're going to go with weird (and, hey, it's certainly more interesting than being just another faceless modern rock band), you might as well go all the way with Buckethead.  A true individual who's a virtuoso on his instrument, with mystery and an instantly recognizable aura.  If anybody could have been a worthy successor to Slash, it was Buckethead.  Unless Axl somehow talks Tom Morello into a slot in GN'R, I think that particular title is dead in the water.

I can't take this.  The new lineup is nothing without Buckethead.  And I mean that.  The band doesn't have that much chemistry together, certainly nowhere near that of the old band.  Axl, while still possessing the best voice in rock 'n' roll, is a recluse who can't release any music or make a move at all.  And he inspires me much less than the young, rebellious Axl of old (although I suppose that can't really be helped...never mind).  Basically, Buckethead was the saviour of the new GN'R, the one thing that would help catapult them into the future.  And now he's gone.

The bleakest day for Guns N' Roses fans since Duff left the band.

Yeah, I say give it at least until RIR4.  With the already somewhat questionable appearance at RIR4 for Gn'R, and now with Buckethead leaving and it being announced on MTV, I would think they'd have to issue some sort of press release confirming whether they're still going to be performing there.

Buckethead's leaving sucks, but it's not the end of the world.  This is a band of many skilled musicians. together for four years without releasing any music, it seems feasible that one or two might get frustrated and leave, regardless of whether the full situation is fucked or not.

There's still hope this NEW gnr will survive. I think if RIR is cancelled then it's all over, i will almost give up waiting for this band unless axl has put some effort to get a new guitarist for RIR

 Sad

and how is buckethead a savior for gn'r? How many tunes of his have you heard that he wrote especially for gn'r? How do you know he even wrote anything? people are being overly dramatic....Savior my ass, yeah he could play guitar real well....but i stiill have yet to hear any of his songs with gn'r.....Don't know what you got til it's gone? well he's gone and we got pretty much nothing....and if he created savior like music with the band, it will be released im sure....

Wheres Davegnr2k in this matter?  I'm sure he'll give us ANOTHER release date or time we'll have the album in our hands now that Bucket is gone, LOL.  Just trying to lighten the mood a bit for us.  On a more serious note this isn't confirmed just yet.  RIR4 will have all the answers.

And one more thing.

It's not GN'R who got famous when Buckethead joined.

It's Buckethead who got famous (and sold many cd's, and earned lots of fans) when he joined GN'R.

I don't wanna start a buckethead bashing thread but i was never a fan of his work and though i would prefer him in GNR than gone, i hope axl gets a new guitar player who's got some rock n roll spirit in him

i like the element buckethead brought to gnr, i was sold after i heard his revamped nightrain solo, i was so hyped up about this new band, excited to see what this guy can do playing rock n' roll on chinese democracy instead of that hillbillly chicken stuff he plays on his solo albums, i really am depressed now for gnr, i don't even wanna check this site, but i'm an addict and i need info so i'm back. i sure hope this isn't official, maybe just something to stir the pot, fuck too much wishful thinking in the gnr world.

i don't doubt that someone could take bucketheads spot, as stated many times if slash can be replaced, so can buckethead, but its just on going, and i don't wanna fuckin wait another year for someone to redo bucketheads shit.  i believe if buckethead doesn't return for rock in rio, than chinese democracy will go down in history as the greatest album that was never released, cause if the other band members have to wait another year or two for someone to do bucketheads guitars on the album, they'll all slowly leave one by one, till all thats left is axl, and a name that used to stand for baddest rock band on the planet, guns n' roses

I think it's over now.. It seams like Axl can't do anything right at the moment.. It's sad. And I hate that Axl or Geffen can't give any stright information.

I love Gn'R Smiley

I can't say I'm disappointed. Without question, BH is an amazing player with great skill. But there were times that his style just sounded horrible over the old material... and to be honest I don't think I could have given him a fair chance unless CD came out with his contributions on it. Until then all we could hear was really his interpretation of a bunch of songs he had nothing to do with (other than going out and playing them years after they were created). If I could hear him playing on a group of songs he really contributed to (more than the 5 we got to hear), then I'd have a good idea of what he was able to bring to the table. It's hard for me to get a grasp of what someone adds to a situation without being given an album to sit down and see what musical statement he made. Having a bunch of bootlegs of him noodling a solo for YCBM doesn't cut it. His other work doesn't help because it's not in the context of axl's songwriting. But that's just me.

As far as a replacement, I don't see why there needs to be 3 players anyways. I always felt it was just result of Tobias being in the group. Fortus even said in an interview he was supposed to be in the band before Buckethead came along, so why not leave it how axl "originally" planned it - finck and fortus. Let Dizzy and Pittman fill in any musical gaps with keyboards on tour and leave it with 2 guitarists.

Slash left because of mainly music differences I believe. BH has left because he is tired of sitting around doing nothing ?!?!

Like I said before, now Axl is gonna get laughed at even more and more....Like I said, this is starting to sound like some 80s rocknroll wanna be back like Ratt or Warrant going through line up changes... next thing u know, Axl will be performing infront of 10 hard-core 50yr old fans in some club in Vegas......

Fuck man this is sooo sad

jesus christ!! i can't believe you people!
i haven't logged in here for ages, but this i wanted to get off my chest. buckethead's alleged departure is NOT the en of guns n' roses. yes, he was an amazing guitar player, but i really think the band can manage without him. it's not like "chinese democracy" was going to see the light of day anytime soon anyhow, so cheer the fuck up. axl has pulled through things like these before. yes, it's a blow, and a big one, but it's not the end of the world. did you people forget what we have seen and heard from axl the past 3 years? songs like "madagascar" and "the blues" are not gonna make guns n' roses just another skid row. "chinese democracy" will see the light of day, and you'll all buy it. AND love it. even your morons who said that you were going to boycott it. we'll see what happens next. guns n' roses is alot of fun. i'm out

« Reply #216 on: March 18, 2004, 03:18:02 AM »

Mattman, I agree with everything you said...Saddest day since Duff walked away.  I'm really getting sick of all these clearly inspired, yet delusional comments on this board about what Axl will do next....He COULD have a revolving door of 75 more guitarists come in, he COULD play sold out shows across the world...He COULD release 7 albums in 5 years with 300 songs on them....He COULD theoretically become vocalist for VR if Weiland can't handle more than 3 hours on the road...I'd bet my life on the chance that Axl will do NONE of the above....It's not "just another blow", it's indicative of a much larger problem.  Axl can't be relied upon to "get his shit together" for any meaningful length of time.
He WAS the saviour for this band..Not to take anything away from the other musicians, but most of the respect that this new incarnation was getting from the musical community came from Bucket's involvement..No, that's too generalizing of a statement..He's no Slash, but Fuck-all, Slash is sure as hell no Bucket....Flame away, but the guy has an unmistakable aura and a larger than life CHARACTER, with inhuman technical proficiency to boot.....This was the intangible that made the band special....The arguments about his "freakish" apprearance hold no merit whatsoever and are flat out sophomoric and boring...If you feel the need to be that superficial, go watch the OC and wax your eyebrows...If anything, Axl should be wearing a mask to hide all the Botox injections and chemical peelings, but I digress...Do you see how moronic the appearance arguments sound??  The whole band looks like a bunch of disjointed freaks, but at the very least it made them stand apart from the pack.
Don't fire back with optimistic rationalizations like "We've never heard him on any material, therefore, he's replaceable."  I said before, as a 7 year fan, in my eyes, he's NOT, I assure you....The post earlier by SlashsAxl referring to the "Hillbilly-Chicken stuff" he plays on his records is just pure ignorance...You don't like the material, fine, but don't demean the ability or the playing by diluting it into some uninformed statement like that.   I recommend listening to more than a few tracks before making your judgment....The man play all genres with unmatched adeptness.
What's the other argument on this board?  Oh...the "ROCK" attitude....give me a break....how fickle....you can throw together all of these pseudo music journalistic descriptive phrases like this: "LA strip club rock n roll decadent punk-inflected self destuctive dangerous sleaze", and what does it amount to?....Yes, we all know the original GNR lived their music, and it created a combustible element...fantastic...How long has it been since any member of GNR, past or present, conducted their lives in that manner?...Do you miss it?  Great, but that edge was gone in 1990, so faulting the new band for lacking such an attribute is pointless.
By Buckethead creating his own character and following his own muse, living his life without a concern in the world for outside influence, THAT'S ROCK N' ROLL!!  Fuck, Johnny Cash was far from a Rock icon as determined by your definitions, didn't record any dirty sleazy blooze Aerosmith boogies, yet he's more Rock and Roll than any of us taking shelter behind our PC's could ever hope to be....It's all abouT how you conduct your life, not setting parameters for yourself...That's more punk rock than coming out in black leather and red hair, with a padlock around your neck....He's a little to tough for some on here to package in a neat little shoebox and digest, so what?

I'm miserable about this!

I'm sorry I disagree. Big Blow was when Duff and Slash left. Guns was still really popular etc etc. The only thing that was shinning some hope on the situation in past 2-3yrs was the fact that BH was there. You think if Axl goes to re-do the part in 3-4 yrs from now anyone is actually gonna give a fuck???
Yes Sounds like Blues and CD are fun and great to listen to, but I'm starting to get embarressed of supporting GNR. Cause nothing seem to go right with them....

I'm starting to feel like GNR was the one legendry back that fucked everything up and is still doing it  rant
