In Philly they were actually connected (although I thought I read in some other cities they were not, so hopefully others answer this for you).

I had friends on both sides. By the middle of the show, I heard it was nearly impossible to walk by though because it was so packed and the walkway between the two was not very wide.

Correct, in some venues it's one area, in others they are two.
