That part maybe. I was just thinking of the 95% of the rest of the song where the piano is just playing arpeggios and chords that I wouldnt classify as riffage. Genesis didnt specify which part of the song. Either way, I still dont consider it a riff, at least not a momorably brilliant one. Its a genius song, but I dont consider it one with a riffy nature of any kind.
oh. okay. But I'm kinda surprised you don't consider that "a memorably brilliant one" because when Axl starts to play that it's instantly recognizable as the "shudder to the climax" so to speak.
..... but then again, that little smirk of Axl's does that for me too.

I can't believe nobody mentioned it, but:
Guns N' Roses - November Rain.
I wouldnt really call that a riff.
You're right. I didn't see the 'riff' part in the thread title. Anyway.....

The first song that popped into my head was Eric Clapton - Layla. I love the outro to that song.
What the Fuck Kujo!
I'm starting to worry about your musical taste. It's so SIMILAR to mine!!
I was just about to post the very same thing. Layla's piano outro is simply sublime.
Others that come to mind:
Trust - The Cure
Octorber - U2
You never gave me your money - The Beatles
Starlight - Muse
Amen Omen - Ben Harper (this is not a piano riff per se, more a piano solo but beatiful)

Arpeggios and chords?
I think the favourite piano solo that Genesis was referring is the one known as the "2nd solo"

(as played by Slash on the guitar - too).
I believe it is:
a mimum (c) followed by a dotted crotchet (b - natural), a quaver (c), a crotchet (d) foolowed by a semi-quaver (c-b), then 4 semi quavers (c - g - e - g), dotted crotchet (c), some demi semi quavers (g - a - g - f), then a minum (g), followed by some other quavers/semi quavers/dotted quavers etc etc. repeat.

Great call on the Ben Harper song. Reminded me that Younger Than Today from his latest Cd is phenomenal also.

I once again affirm that it isnt a riff. If I consider that progression a riff, then I would consider every piece of music as one continuous riff, which I dont, so I dont, so it isn't.
Kudos for the musical terminology commonly referred to as eighth notes and quarter notes though
