Velvet Revolver Say No To Reality Show, Plan To Announce Lead Vocalist

date: 05/26/2008

It's certainly no secret that Velvet Revolver, having recently parted ways with Scott Weiland as their lead singer, are currently looking for a new voice. After two albums together, Weiland decided to reunite with his original band Stone Temple Pilots and now Velvet Revolver, which consist of former Guns N Roses members Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum, are in the process of trying to replace him. After leaving Guns N Roses and successfully starting Velvet Revolver together, the band has a 'Been There, Done That' attitude and they couldn't be more ready to start the process with finding a vocalist.

We caught up with drummer Matt Sorum to get his thoughts on the band being excited for the next chapter together.

Matt Sorum Excited To Move Forward

"We're coming out with something in a couple of weeks and I think it's going to surprise everybody. It's exciting. We're moving forward. We're going to keep going and play Rock N Roll and get a new guy singing so, we did it before we'll do it again."

Sorum even admitted that Mark Burnett, Producer for many hit reality shows on T.V., approached the band about possibly doing a sequel to Rockstar, but Velvet Revolver didn't think it would hold true to their integrity. Sorum also talked about saying no to the reality show and where the band is in the process of finding a new singer.

Matt Sorum Gives An Update On Velvet Revolver Seach For Singer

"We're really seriously thinking about doing something online. Yeah, we got offered a couple of different television ideas you know. Mark Burnett called us and asked us to do that Rockstar thing and we basically said 'No!' to that. We didn't feel it was right for us. No disrespect to him but it just didn't feel right for what we want to do. As many years as we've tried to keep our integrity intact we felt that wasn't the right forum for us to do it so, we got some ideas and we should have that news in a couple weeks."

Both Matt Sorum and Scott Weiland have gone back and forth in the press about the bands breakup, even to the point where Weiland threatened to reveal secrets about Sorum to the press. Stone Temple Pilots have started their reunion tour with a show at Rock on the Range in Columbus, Ohio and current tour dates extend until October 24th at Voodoo Music Festival in New Orleans. Look for Velvet Revolver to get back into the studio in the near future, with a new vocalist and a new band name. Many rumors as to who the band has been rehearsing with have been circulating, but everything remains under wraps, at least for a little while longer.

Ultimate Guitar's title is misleading...here is the original article from Artisan News.  The video does not seem to work.

A new name is a good idea, it may take  a bit of the pressure off a new unknown guy trying to fill Scott's shoes.

How about "Silk Stalkings".  I was going to say "Silk Revolver" or "Silk Worms", but Silk Stalkings" reminds me of the tv show.

I'm actually glad to hear this.  I don't think it would feel right calling it VR with a new singer.

I think this kinda changes it all. I mean,  with the VR name, they were quite well known, and maybe it would work out with an unknown guy as a singer... but with another name... well I guess they will have to start over and find some known guy like they did with Scott to gain some press attention... thats what I think...

Slash came up with revolver, scott added black velvet but they scrapped black i think so they went by velvet revolver, since weiland's gone maybe they the velvet part gets scrapped too and just call themselves revolver.. it would work for me.. i always thought velvet revolver didn't roll well..  vlvrvlr

i hope they go by revolver and start playing some ballsier music Smiley

well yeah... in the end what matters is the music, not the name of the band.  Wink

Personally, I think a new band name is a misstep.  As VR, they played new material as well as GnR and STP songs.   So they change names again, and now what? They continue to play GnR songs and VR songs + whatever-they-call-themselves-now songs?  Too much confusion for a band that produces (in my opinion) decidedly average music...

Is the name-change part legit?  It's not mentioned here:

I agree with that.  It would help to get someone that's not a complete unknown.  But in the end, I do hope they make some better music whoever they pick.

The video is working now...it sounds like they are going to announce in the next couple of weeks how they are going to find a new singer (e.g. online).  I don't see where Matt says anything about a new band name?

PAUL STANLEY Is 'Not Opposed' To Idea Of KISS Carrying On With All-New Members - June 1, 2008
Roy Hilmar Svendsen of Norway's NRK reports that KISS bassist/vocalist Gene Simmons has confirmed what has been some fans' biggest fear for some years now ? that KISS are indeed planning to keep KISS running and touring after founders Paul Stanley and Simmons decide to take off the make-up for good.

During a familiar rant by Simmons about how KISS could go on forever, Svendsen asked jokingly if the band would consider looking for replacements for Simmons and Stanley in a TV show, similar to programs like "Rock Star" and "American Idol".

"We have already signed the contract, and it is going to go through in a couple of months," Simmons reportedly replied.

Really?

"Yes, of course!" he confirmed.

In a separate interview, KISS co-founder Paul Stanley was reportedly not very happy to hear about his bandmate's statement regarding KISS' future.

"These things are typical," Stanley said. "Gene says something as if it was a fact, but there is no signed deal. The future has many possibilities. Will it happen next week? No! Am I opposed to the idea? Of course not."

According to NRK, Stanley said that the members of VELVET REVOLVER were planning a similar stunt to find the replacement for lead singer Scott Weiland, who was fired at the end of the band's European tour earlier this year. However, in the end the band decided not to do it, according to Stanley, because of VELVET REVOLVER guitarist Slash's wish to remain "cool" and credible to his fans.

"I don't have to be that cool," Stanley told NRK with a smile.

Wow-I'm starting to think splitting with Scott would not have mattered-there is footage on you tube of Scott rambling on in NewJersey  trying to say he's sorry for showing late (it was an hour between Filter and STP coming on stage)-Scott seems totally out of it, I'll be surprised if he makes it through the tour-you can hear fans booing in the background-it looks really bad, at this point I know he's seperated from his wife, he looks terrible
