That's in Australia.  It's the Southern hemisphere, and heat rises.  Grin

Seriously, let me just say this.  If there were NO global warming --- if there were no evidence that the poles are getting smaller, and all the other things that indicate this trend that is exceptional and not a part of normal temperature changes --- if none of that were true, I'd STILL say "get off oil!" for reasons of air quality, national security, and economics.

That said, the fact that the global warming naysayers are wrong and we'll actually be saving the planet...well, that's just an added bonus!

Perhaps we are doing global warming even though the planet is cooling.  How much worse would it be if the planet wasn't cooling?

Quote
All four agencies that track Earth's temperature (the Hadley Climate Research Unit in Britain, the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York, the Christy group at the University of Alabama, and Remote Sensing Systems Inc in California) report that it cooled by about 0.7C in 2007. This is the fastest temperature change in the instrumental record and it puts us back where we were in 1930. If the temperature does not soon recover, we will have to conclude that global warming is over.

There is also plenty of anecdotal evidence that 2007 was exceptionally cold.

Anecdotes aren't science. 2007 wasn't exceptionally cold, it was one of the warmest years of the past century. 2006 was a really hot year, because of El Nino I think, and global warming doesn't predict that temperatures will rise every year, but rather that the trend is upwards. Within the trend there will be spikes up and down because of various factors....but you can see the trend in this graph for example.

Some have argued that the planet goes thru natural cycles of cooling & warming. We have been recording data on this for only about 150 years, some cycles may take 10,000 years.

With that said, reducing emissions will improve air quality and getting ourselves away from foregn oil will be a big financial benefit. So regardless of what you believe, lower emissions are a good goal. We can't kill the economy in the process though, there is a smart way to do it and it can be done.

Tap, regardless of if its cooling or warming, we need to be cleaning and reducing pollution.  Global cooling would be bad too.

Yes, and it will come around again but not any time soon. Probably not much we can do about that except buy thicker jackets.

I have always felt global warming is bullshit

Why? Global warming is pretty much fact (as much as science can be fact), the only dispute is whether humans are contributing to it. The majority of the evidence available suggests that we are, and as several people have said - even if we aren't, cutting down on oil consumption and cleaning up pollution is a worth goal in itself. The main and really only thing standing in the way is the mantra that economies have to expand and we have to get richer.

let me clarify

I think The way people act like the world is going to explode and that we are causing the end of the world is bullshit. I think its the democrats scare tactic.

I'd suggest listening to scientists rather than politicians, though you'll probably find their message even scarier. The point isn't that the world is going to explode - who ever said that - but that we are right at the point where we may not be able to reverse the damage.

If u read some of the material though, the world is suppose to warm something like 2 degrees by the year 2100........ I mean who can tell that? The world since 1920 has raised something like a couple thousandths of a degree or something..... not sure exactly but I remember reading it and seeing it wasnt much.

I could see if we were having record high temperatures every month but we arent. It does seem the seasons are getting shorter in some ways but that could just be a natural earth cycle.

I guess its a good thing that Global warming isnt a republican cause though or they'd be pushing it like a Hurricane Katrina would happen every year so thank god for that at least.

Scientists, that's what they do. Just because you don't understand something, it doesn't make it false.

It's more than that.

Flat-Screen TV Gas 'a Climate Time Bomb'

Friday , July 04, 2008

NEWAU

Booming demand for flat-screen televisions could have a greater impact on global warming than the world's largest coal-fired power stations, scientists warn.

A greenhouse gas called nitrogen trifluoride, used to make the TVs, is 17,000 times more potent than carbon dioxide, said Michael Prather, director of the environment institute at the University of California, Irvine.

But no one yet knows how much of it is being released into the atmosphere by industry, a report in Britain's The Guardian said.

Prather's research shows production of the gas, which remains in the atmosphere for 550 years, is "exploding".

It is expected to double by next year, from the current 4,000 tons produced annually.

But unlike other key greenhouse gases ? such as carbon dioxide, sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) and perfluorocarbons (PFCs) ? emissions of the gas are not restricted under the Kyoto protocol or similar agreements, The Guardian report said.

Prather and his colleague Juno Hsu ? writing in the journal Geophysical Research Letters ? said this year's production of nitrogen trifluoride is equivalent to 67 million tons of carbon dioxide.

That meant the gas has "a potential greenhouse impact larger than that of the industrialised nations' emissions of PFCs or SF6, or even that of the world's largest coal-fired power plants".

Air Products, which produces the gas for the electronics industry, told New Scientist that very little nitrogen trifluoride is released into the atmosphere.

But Prather raised concerns about companies being careless with the gas, given the lack of a regulatory framework.

Good point, the Earth will be fine no matter what happens. We are the ones who will be screwed.
