DON`T SAY BAD WORDS

« on: January 18, 2007, 12:10:27 AM »

for me the illusion albums are great...best music than appetite for destruction....
i know appetite is more famous...or made more money  or whatever....

but lets be honest....appetite doesn?t have a songs like breakdown or coma.....locomotive and dust n?bones......

for me the illusion are master pieces......and appetite is a great album

i was reading a book about the 1000 albums you need to hear before you die....
and it has appetite but not the illusions.....and it has metallica?s albums like black album , master, and justice.......so i think it?s not fair what we are doing to the illusion....

and i said the metallica thing, because anyone knows that all the rock family respect more GNR than metallica.....

by this i?m not saying that metallica sucks....not at all dudes.....but when you are growing old....you start to like music with a great taste...not just two guitars with distortion making noise....is good for a while but not for ever...

so i apretiate complete music.....with piano, keyboards, harmonica and even synth....

so the illusion were a mature GUNS N ROSES.....

so they were and are great.......enough said.

totally agree.....those two albums are a musical masterpiece. AFD is great and got the ball rolling for them....but UYI1&2 is so musical mature and kicks ass at the same time. They are so over looked!

Great opinion. Love to see those Illusion fans that stick up for those albums, they are great & are masterpieces along side AFD.

Although for me, AFD is still my favorite.

i like illusions.

However appetite is my favourite, raw aggressive rock album, it came at an importent time also, just as the market was beginning to exploit the popularity of rock and metal by bringing mega crappy commercial bands in, gnr came in and brought the realness into the game, the albums great and much more memorable.

Illusions is a different album, its not so raw, some songs are (like the izzy ones) boring, and a few too many ballads there for me. The time it came out also, it would have been over shadowed by the uprising of some twats who i dont need to name.

When i first listened to illusions a few years back, having loved appetite, it took me, probably a year to really get into it....most people would judge dismiss it from not being used to the change in sound, which is why i think these albums are less recognised.

I kinda see what you're getting at.
But speaking as a fan of rock in general, my love for bands like Metallica and Guns N' Roses only grows stronger. I can't imagine myself not listening to either bands as I get older.
What music you listen to has nothing to do with age.

Although, most of my friends have started to listen to other mellow stuff, I still like my heavy rock. beer

I think their main complaint with the illusions would be so-called 'filler' tracks on both albums. And also at times it seems like UYI doesn't quite know what it is. The self-awareness on Illusion is more wavering than AFD.

I always hear the word "filler" in regards to th UYI albums, and I'm sorry, but I don't hear any filler. Every song adds to the epic journey of twists and turns in styles that make the albums so great.

People use the word "filler" to describe above-average songs, that they necessarily wouldn't place in their Top-10. I feel that if anything was "filler" for me, it was probably Bad Apples on UYI I & Shotgun Blues on UYI II.

The thing about UYI filler is that no two people agree on what specific tracks are actually filler. But the majority say that there is filler, and that is what the public accepts.

I refuse to choose between them.  If I want raw GNR, I listen to Appetite.  If I want bluesy, it's UYI I.  If I want a little more experimental, I go with UYI II.

The songs some call filler are some of my favorites.  Bad Obsession, Bad Apples, Breakdown...I love all that shit.  I've said this before, but I think the "filler" (meaning non-singles) is what makes a good album great or average.  You expect great singles and hits, but the stuff that isn't on MTV...is it killer too?  If it is, it's a great album.  Or, is it truly "filler"...meant to take up space between the singles?  If it is, the album is average.  GNR "filler" is still very cool stuff.  I mean, Perfect Crime, Dust N' Bones...I crave that stuff more than the hits, because I only hear it when I spin the album at home or in the car.

That's a weird order.  I'd have said UYI II was the bluesy one, with songs like YCBM, 14 Years, Civil War, So Fine and Estranged.

UYI is more experimental, stuff like Coma, and the odd (but great) ones like Bad Obsession, Dead Horse and Dust n Bones.

Just my opinion, and YES, they should play more illusion era stuff.  I'd dig hearing the izzy tunes (dtj, dnb, 14 years, pretty tied up) and others like Coma, Bad Obsession, Estranged, Civil War.  I don't think any of those have been played lately.

Song for song, AFD is an incredible album.  The Illusions, while far from "overlooked" (as someone mentioned earlier), aren't as consistently solid as Appetite, but given that AFD was 12 tracks as opposed to UYI's 30 tracks, that's to be expected.  For a double album at the time, the Illusions were, and still are, a fairly significant (if perhaps not historic) acheivement in rock, both in terms of sales and critical acclaim.

I think Bad Obsession is a great bluesy track, with that harmonica wailing.  Anyway, neither album is one-dimensional, so you can find exceptions either way.

the Illusions and Appetite are different for a reason. Axl did not want to repeat himself so he went in a totally different direction. both the Illusions and Appetite are fantastic records, but they are vastly different, which is a good thing.

UYI's have great songs no doubt but the sleaze rock of AFD made them famous...UYI kinda represents the downfall of music at that time...the excesses of rock bands from the 80's made way for the Grunge movement...cuz Nirvana and AIC and PJ and SG and to a lesser extent STP....brought things back to a level that people could identify with
