Here Today...Gone to Bed

« on: November 28, 2006, 07:00:42 AM »

Since rediscovering Guns N? Roses as a 14 year old, after having listening to ?that band that swore a lot? when I was 8 I have been a fan of the fabled Axl Rose, however it wasn?t until two years later in 1999 when Axl re-emerged onstage with Gilby Clark that the whole Chinese Democracy story began had I followed with intense scrutiny the mans actions and words.  In 2002 I attended my first (and unfortunately to various chains of events only) Guns N? Roses show, a moment that was so poignant in my young life. To see the band that I had effectively bought back to being ?cool? certainly with my group of friends and then classmates. Guns N? Roses were always MY band, not Axl?s, nor Slash?s. Mine.  I borrowed (and subsequently kept) my brothers Appetite tape and since then revived (if only in my being) the legend of GN?f?nR. I decided that this band was worthy of my adulation, not MTV not Kurt Loder (or Cobain for that matter). Sure the success they had before I even recognised their existence was huge, but to me they were this badass band that only I knew about. And that?s how I liked it. My band.
Now Guns N? Roses are big, certainly bigger than when I first came across that AFD tape and what do I have. Slash in a roundabout way taught me guitar-I would never have picked up that or any instrument without hearing that tape, playing guitar is one of life?s pleasures for me.  Stumbling across HTGTH about 7 years ago when I was trying to find pictures of Axl and Gilby in the aforementioned re-emergence I found a whole community of like minded folks?folks I didn?t realise existed. Since that day I have checked every day (there was a hiatus after 2002s failed tour where my enthusiasm wained) for news of the bands whereabouts and more importantly the Chinese Democracy release date and I am still waiting.
I listened to the song ?Silkworms? the other day from RiRIII the song didn?t sound like it had been worked on a hell of a lot (although I do actually like it) I would go so far as to say Pitman could have thrown it together himself.
A thought crept into my mind,. A thought that I had never even fathomed before and here it is: The Guns N? Roses album Chinese Democracy doesn?t exist.
Kudos to Axl if it doesn?t, what does he have to prove to anyone? He is Guns N? Roses, its his creation and the success he has had with it is phenomanal. The sales of UYI alone are incredible let alone AFD?s continuing popularity.
?Where?s the new material Axl? When are you gonna prove to us that you are the talent you think you are?? we hear the media cry. When Michelangelo finished the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel did people 10 years later slate him for being a waster? What does Axl have to prove? Nothing to nobody?we don?t need a new album to know he one of the most successful musicians in our generation, sure he?s an arsehole but who cares? Maybe Axl thinks this and the album title is itself an in joke. The notion of a Chinese democracy will never happen (maybe not never-never, I don?t want this to be pulled up in 200 years and someone post a reply ?ha democracy in China, you suck SlunkSoma") and maybe what Axl thought at the time (some 8 years or so ago) was a throw away comment has become the biggest practical joke in the music business? history.
Although ?Better? still kicks ass.

Ps: Please note that I have intentionally used words such as ?could? and ?maybe?
