It was bad enough they decided to sell themselves out by doing rockstar, but they knew about the other supernova band well before the show took place!  Didn't they even have the slightest thought that if they had to change their name later on after the show it would really hurt the band and its popularity.  I love Gilby and think he is a great guy but damn I think he stooped a bit low on this one, and that interview that the HTGTH guy did with gilby, how he said that if Slash could have used rockstar he would have.  That is total BS imo, Slash and the boys would NEVER do that, it would ruin their image and those guys arent sellouts.  Once again no hate on Gilby hes kinda a freelance musician and was really good with Guns and his solo efforts but damn.  What gilby and the boys thinking when they picked that name?  It doesnt make sense one bit...  even their fan boards on the rockstar supernova site is filled with Supernova haters.  Personally I think no matter which singer was chosen the end result will be the same, a band with a short lived life and a ruined image for the band members, maybe Lukas will benefit (im hoping he does).  I have more respect for Vince Neil performing drunk than being as much of a sellout as Tommy, even tho Motley Crue was kindof a sellout band back in the day much like todays emo music and hiphop rap stuff.

I don't think they knew of this band "Supernova".. I suppose they could google it but maybe they did and didn't find much about the other band. I just searched on sing365.com & nothing came up.

This stuff happens pretty often. STP was originally Mighty Joe Young or something, but found out there was a musician who went by that name. Friends of mine had a band Hot Pursuit, but later found out there was a chick band by that name in California, so they decided to change it. I think I remember another band getting sued for "claiming they stole their name" a few years ago.. Can't remember who. And besides, why is this "other" band suing them for anyway. Don't you think they should be labelled the bad guys in this, as they seem to be just looking for money..

Are Tommy, Gilby, & Jason really stealing the fame this other band "Supernova" worked so hard to achieve.?? Or is it just an honest coincidence??

i say it's a coincidence...i mean these 3 guys hardly have to steal anybody else's thunder...especially tommy, but jason and gilby are pretty respected as well i think

there is other instances of that happening too pasnow

Bush...in canada they had to go by BushX cuz there was already a band by that name. Bush ended up eventually purchasing the name from them

i got a buddy who's band was called boondoggle and there is another band i've seen cd's for with the same name

I never heard that about Bush, but yeah, seems like a simple enough name where a few bands out there probably went by that.

i dont know if the band heard of the other supernova band, but i know the producers of the show knew about the band.
this is from mtvnews.com:

Supernova are perhaps best known for their tune "Chewbacca," which appeared on the soundtrack to Kevin Smith's 1994 film "Clerks." When the group discovered the show's producers' intentions to use Supernova as the name for their supergroup, the band contacted them; negotiations between both sides followed on the heels of the suit's filing. Those talks hit a wall last month, forcing the band to take additional legal action to protect its rights.

The suit insisted that the "Rock Star" producers willfully ignored the fact that the Supernova moniker was unavailable and that "individuals within defendants' own organizations informed defendants of plaintiff's rights in the Supernova mark." Using the Supernova name would cut into the original band's future earnings, as it would interfere "with plaintiff's business relationships" or cause the band to lose merchandising deals and potential offers to perform, according to the suit. The filing also suggested that some fans of the band might be confused and therefore duped into buying the new Supernova's merchandise and music.

^ I'm not realy care about the first supernova, just kinda feel sorry for the guys .
I think they could change the name when they find out , that there another supernova band - if they didnt know ... some publicity will? not damage their sales like you said it can only increase their sales .
