GnR mention in Philly newspaper

a local-entertainment writer for the Philadelphia Daily News attended the show on the 17th. I actually hooked this guy up with tix - he's a friend of my cousin's (who is also a writer in Philly).
nothing major here, but he gives a thumbs up on Axl. and also mentions his hair stylist....

THERE WE were at 30th Street waiting for the Amtrak to New York Wednesday night to see Guns N' Roses (more on that in a minute) when we spot the hard-to-miss Dikembe Mutombo. The ex-Sixers center's family still lives in the 'burbs and his wife, Rose, studies at Villanova. As we shot the breeze during the ride, the 7-2 Mutombo was eager to tell us about the Biamba Marie Mutombo Hospital, named after his late mother, which his charitable foundation is building in Congo. He's put $15 million of his own into the project in his native country, formerly known as Zaire. Mutombo, who has a year left on his contract with the Houston Rockets and was heading to New York on hospital business, said he was leaving yesterday for London to meet with British Prime Minister Tony Blair and U2's Bono, with whom he works on the ONE campaign to promote AIDS efforts in Africa. He said he feels it's his duty to help Africans in as many ways as he can.
As for the show, it ruled. It took us long into the 140-minute set to get past the fact that it wasn't the real Guns N' Roses, meaning no Slash, nor Duff McKagan who were in the band when we saw them three times between 1991-1992. But to our delight, Axl Rose and his hired guns played all but two songs from the classic "Appetite for Destruction," and were joined on three songs by original Gunner Izzy Stradlin. Kid Rock came out to sing "Nightrain" and Skid Row's Sebastian Bach also helped Axl out on "My Michelle." We were glad they showed up for the Hammerstein Ballroom gigs, which they failed to do at a 2002 show at the Wachovia Center, which inspired a melee. Axl still sounds great but he should really lose the crazy-looking cornrow weave he's rocking. His locks, as it happens, are now in the hands of Liz Jacobs, a local hair/makeup artist who'll tour Europe with the band as Axl's hair stylist through July. Jacobs, a CAPA grad, says her friend Michael Kuhn, of Salon Thalia, who styles Daryl Hall's hair, hooked her up with the gig.

He is in the public eye...it just goes with the territory. I'm sure he can handle it.

I dunno what you would call negative press, but this isn't too positive. They hardly talk about the music, it's all about them missing the old band, Axl not showing up in Philidelphia and Axl's hair....
They just weren't outright negative. Thank you for posting anyway, the title just got my hopes up on something a bit more elaborate and well...... more positive.

in 2002, the mainstream press were knocking the band's covers of AFD and praising the new stuff
in 2006, it seems like they are praising the playing of the old stuff and hating a little or alot on the new material, if they mention it at all.
god i hate the press.

no offense, but you people are too sensitive.
"As for the show, it ruled."
"Axl still sounds great"
the most important factors when talking about a gnr show:
1. how was the show overall?
2. did axl sound good?
this guy gives a thumbs up on both.
so the primary takeaway for anyone reading this is that Axl is putting on a great show. to me, that's important.
(especially since axl lost alot of cred as a live performer after the debacle of a performance at the VMAs.)

Not for nothing, but it's a pretty poorly written article. 1/2 is about Mutumbo, 1/4 about the show, and 1/4 about Axl's hairdresser. He does state "As for the show,", which leads me to believe his intent was to write about the concert, but it's really all over the place yet vague regarding anything about the show (How was the band?? who's in the band??) He names Axl's hairdresser but no band members. I would think the majority of people reading the entertainment section of a newspaper do not know the current lineup, yet be interested once the hear the members & their former bands (NIN, Primus, Replacements, Psychodelic Furs).
You're right, he says "Axl sounded great" and he is pretty positive. So it's certainly not a bad review, just bad journalism.

but then there would only be about 100 people at every gnr show.
and i should have made it more clear that this writer is a local (meaning philly-only) "gossip" columnist. his column is short and he mentions philadelphia-related stuff only (ex. philly entertainment news, sightings, philly nightlife, etc.).
so the fact that he even found a way to mention the GnR shows was cool. and he certainly was not trying to write a reveiw of the show.

Maybe he was telling those who DON'T KNOW that this band is not the original band! His choice of words is wrong--he should have said "original." The "real" GNR today is what it is. His choice of words can cause confusion: imagine some 14 year old talking to his friend:
"Hey, I went to NYC last week to see GNR, it was awesome!"
"Dude, I don't think you saw GNR. I read somewhere that it is not the real band."
"Oh, I THOUGHT I saw GNR, but maybe not, who really knows?"

good point, his choice of words are wrong...original would have been more accurate
