What's out there, free or cheap to use on PC , simple and better than Audacity ?

Try looking for Wavepad... free version is floating arund somewhere.....it's a bit easier to use then Audacity......but it ain't exactly better. You have to try it. Do you want to record you with a acoustic guitar? Or just your voice? I think the most important thing is getting a good mic. But it depends on if this is for shits and giggles ofcourse... A simple mic can do.

Kristal is quite good for a freeware ,u could also get some great free plugins like www.voxengo.com , www.digitalfishphones.com and http://www.kjaerhusaudio.com/classic-series.php those are free and good quality dunno what soundcard do u have could try http://www.asio4all.com/ or www.kxproject.com they will give you better results than your original driver ,i assumed u dont have a preamp so make sure u record it louder as u can whitout clipping.
U could check www.kvraudio.com for tips ,more free plugins  etc...

i recommend that as well. if you use good mics and can isolate sound you can really make a good sounding demo with that.
