How many copies will Chinese Democracy have to sell to be considered a success?  Its been 12 long years since a GNR release.  A lot of money has been put in to this cd.  Im saying 6 million at the minimum.  I would like it to sell over 10.  What do you guys think?

Personally I think that they will sell around 800,000 copies the first week, just because everyone is going to go out and see if it's any good. When reading the internet, I always hear about famous people saying they'd like to hear what Axl has had up his sleave for the last 13 years.  But I think the only possible way for them to sell that many in the first week is if they release a really strong single that is a really catchy one, if they release a single that isn't all that great but still a good one, then they'll probably sell around 500,000 their first week. After a year of release and 3 or 4 singles, they should be past the 3 million mark, and eventually get up to 5 or 6 million for sure in the long run IMO.

I think it will sell but it has to have good songs on it, and the good songs need to be better then madagascar and the blues, they also cant be songs like silkworms.  Id like to hear a cd with a mix of afd, lies, and uyi sound all in one.  For example an afd sound with songs like wttj, scom, pc, rocket queen, from uyi civil war, nov rain, ycbm, etc...  CD needs a strong promotion too, they cant rely on old fans to buy the record, for example my dad bought AFD that was the first time i heard guns and i was prob around 8, but my dad isnt goign out to buy CD.  So the promotion needs to target 16-to mid to late 20s.30s.  Either way it would be great to have CD come out right before the summer.

2-3 million in the U.S and 8 -10 million worldwide would be beyond all expectations.

Hahaha

a) this thread has been discussed millions of times

b) I think AFD after all these years has sold around 20 million

CD will not sell 20 million copies? rofl

To be a success I guess around 3-4 million copies worldwide would be good. I'm not sure how that would relate to a profit from the investment. If it sold 5 or 6 million over a few years that would be mind blowing. In the long term I guess it could sell that much. But a couple of million and we can lock all jamesloftons threads about it being a flop?and nesquiks posts about how Robin ruined it because he is indus hihi (sorry couldn't resist, just teasing)

I dont start threads about it being a flop.

I agree with that. But it really depends on how they try to promote it. CD isn't the guaranteed blockbuster that it would have been 3 or 4 years ago.

The success of Greatest Hits won't hurt it.  You know how much Gn'R clothing was sold after GH? Quite a bit.  It would be the same effect if Chinese Democracy were released anytime soon.

taking into account how many people will just download it, i'd say 5 million world wide would be a massive sucess but i'm starting to think we will hear no more gn'r untill axl is dead!

Alot of people will probably download it. Thats why it should be released with a bonus of some kind.... Something that cant be put online, Just to keep the sales ticking over.

If this hadn't cost so many millions to make at this point, I'd say around Contraband numbers would be successful, but for the cost of making the album, it would have to make four or five times that and a massive world tour. As others have said, singles may be the deciding factor.

Well, if the next two albums will have been recorded by the time CD comes out, then they can make up that loss from 3 albums not just one.  If each sells on average 3 million that is 9 million in just the US.  Now add the worldwide sales, and I think they should make a decent profit from Guns.
