Umm, didnt Axl stop Offspring legally? He used the Chinese Democracy name for the tour in 2002 and for shirts and shit, and the logo reveal. Didnt that legally entitle him to the name, so Offspring said it wasnt worth it when they got the legal papers sent to them?

Several months after announcing their album would be called "Chinese democracy", Dexter Holland said it was only a joke and that they never intended to pursue it any further. So who knows, maybe the GN'R legal team didn't have to serve them any papers.

I have the same opinion as N.I.B : considering different albums can have the same title, I don't think this release will have any effect on CD, especially since it's an unknown band.

I remember reading that the Axl camp sent Offspring's people a "Cease and Desist" order but eventually it was determined that no legal action could stop them.  They ended up calling their piss-poor album something else in the end though.

I remember that. It was kinda funny. What surprises me is that the name Chinese Democracy still hasn't been used. If Axl doesn't hurry, someone like 50 cent or Eminem is going to steal the name from Axl. It would be a great marketing strategy for whoever steals it. It will probably happen within a year or two. I wouldn't be shocked if someone like Weird Al Yankovic took it, but it will more than likely be one of those famous rappers.

If its copyrighted, no one can use it.

They can change 60% of the name and have it, for example, EMINEM stands for M&M, just spelt differently, so as to avoid a lawsuit from the candy giant.

So if they do something like that, then its cool, no one can do anything about it.
Otherwise, its a no brainer, people are just poking fingers at Axl, no one really has the balls to pull it off commercially.

elmir, the copyright issue has been brought up before, and Axl doesn't own it. There is a book from many years ago called 'Chinese Democracy'. Someone WILL take it from Axl. It would create tons of publicity and controversy. It will be a sad day when it really happens. Axl just might abandon the project, because its hard to imagine him changing the name this late in the game.

Not sure about that.? There's been alot of speculation off and on over the past couple of years about whether or not the name has already changed.? But if it hasn't I can't imagine Axl dropping the project all-together just because someone used the name.? After all this time one would have to conclude that the album will either come out or forever remain "coming soon".

But who knows anymore?? Huh

kayoss, I've thought the same thing concerning the name change. Its possible CD was a working title that just got out of hand. At the Osaka show, Axl specifically states that 'The Blues' is just a working title. But to everyone its The Blues, and when the tracklist is revealed, The Blues might not be listed, but when hearing the album its on there, but with a different title. But the name 'Chinese Democracy' is known all over the world. It would be a shitty marketing strategy to change it, and album sales would suffer in concern to curious fans. But if Axl has the same advisers he had in 2002, the name is probably changed.
