i think that the crew back then was much more tight than on the last tour, there was not much for axl to adjust, he barely even showed up to soundcheck and that says alot about the confident in the crew.

I think you're wrong.

Watch one of the MTV documentaries about GN'R and you'll hear Axl singing something like "All we need is patience.... and really good monitor men" during one of the 1992 shows.

Do you know why the Montreal show was stopped? The monitors weren't working.

/jarmo

with hundreds of shows you're sure to have some technical diffeculties some times, i don't think the monitors sucked all the time, what i was trying to say was that the longer you tour the better the soundguys will be. the sound if often less good in the early 91 shows than the 92 and 93 imo, and i think the sound would have been getting better and better if they kept on touring. the sound in the last couple of 02 show were great!

i also think that the monitor quality varies and that the band rocks harder and better when "the monitors are kicking" guess it depends on the venue too....

tell me about one boot from the uyi tour where you can see axl's waist pack, it's not there man because he didn't adjust it himself.
and it is possible to have controll over your voice level and monitor level and efx with a waist pack like that, i believe that he only uses it to adjust his monitor level tho since the guy out in the crowd has a much better chance of hearing how it's supposed to be...
Wrong. It would be way too distractive to manage the fx controls on his back all the time. It's not like the guitar, when you have presets and can look where you're stepping.
It's just the soundboard guy who puts the effect needed at each time. Dave is right about the monitor mixing - it's there to make him hearing himself and can sing better.

on the uyi boots that i have they basically adjust the sound to perfection during the first song, at least thats what i can make out of it...
Just try to listen to Axl's screams at the SCOM ending (behind all the noise) and you'll hear clearly a lot of reverb there. And that's pretty normal.

Yeah Axl is definitely going to have to use some kind of voice enhancement because by the sound of the 2002 tour, he needs it.

Agree.

Just listen to the 2002 tour promo-clip and you will hear it on Madagascar.
totally agree, but it's not so bad
Axl still have a great voice

first off, it you actually read what you just quoted you'll find that we agree so i don't see how i'm wrong. I'm not saying axl has his efx or soundlevel on his waist pack, i'm only saying that it's possible, like he could have if he wanted to, it's not lile its a technical hard thing to do. like it says right there in my quote i think he uses his pack to adjust his monitor level and thats it, so yeah Dave is right  confused

and second, i know there's some reverb eco shit on the last scom screams, and i know axl isn't adding that himself, obviousely because he doesn't have a remote control for it, just like he didn't have controll over his monitors back on the uyi tour.

and when you hear the monitors well you'd obviousely sound better than if you don't.  ok

I don't understand the big deal about effects.

It's not like he relies on the effects or on backing singers doing all the singing for him.

Guitar players use effects too and they can have a guy who's switching them on/off for them. Sometimes you don't see the player himself stepping on a pedal, but the effect is still there.

Do you also think about effects used on albums?

i think efx can be extremely cool ecpesially on guitars, but on vocals aswell, both live and on records. that said, they should not be used too much and it's a fine line i guess... When it comes to guitar efx i think they basicall should be saved for solos and mood setting type of playing tho.

when it comes to vocal efx it's really cool too, like the omg efx or the reverb shit after scom, but again, not if it is used too much.

What i don't like tho is when bands record something they can't do live, like a really long scream on record should be just as long live.

i think that is one of the main quality marks with gn'r, they are real, they can play anything live and i don't think axl uses voice enhancers to be able to hold that lald scream or the jungle scream nor anything else, he is actually THAT good.

He had a lot of voice enhancers on the last tour, echos, reverbs, compression..all that stuff.

Listen to Pittsburgh Welcome to the Jungle, he has all sorts of shit on his voice.

I think Axl will use a lot of different vocal effects on Chinese Democracy. The only studio song we have heard was Oh My God, and he had a multitude of effects on that cut.

I think it would be funny if Axl used a Megaphone in a song just to show Scott  how stupid it looks. We all know Axl's got the badass highs and lows of all voices still to this day.

Whats stupid about it? Scott uses the megaphone for a few words on Sex Type Thing. But its a great song, and the effects are there to sound creepy, not look cool holding a megaphone.

We do? Im sure on CD Axl can nail it, but when live he looks like someone taking a dump when doing the high notes.

Sorry Jarmo.
The reason why the Montreal riot happened was because Olympic Stadium is the most poorly built stadium in North America in the last 50 years. I was on a tour there in 2001 and found out that they stopped having concerts there in the mid-1990s because the accoustics were so poor there and bands were complaining. Its also a horrible place to watch baseball - thats why the Expos left. Also, it is in the middle of nowhere in MOntreal. It is already obsolete and can't hold Olympic functions!
In Axl's case, he just complained about this briefly to Gilby and then walked off stage reall early in the show. It wasn't the monitors - he just couldn't hear himself because the accoustic in the arena were so bad. He walked off and another riot happened.

this is a simple thing really

the mix "guitars, drums, bass, keyboards etc go into axls ear through his earpiece

sometimes when u play  live u have a hard time hearing a good mix, anyone who has played live knows that depending on where u are standing at on stage, sometimes all u can hear is bass, sometimes only drums, sometimes only guitar

so through the ear piece he hears a perfect mix all the time just like he was listening to a cd through earphones

when he sings he can also hear his voice

im a singer and ive played gigs back in the day where i couldnt hear myself sing, very fuckin hard to play a gig when u cant hear your vocals, so the ear piece allows axl to hear everything at a perfect balance

the knob he turns adjusts the volumes and thats it.

All singers use this, he used it on the UYI tour too.

Brilliant answer? ok? rofl

Axl never wore a waist pack nor did he adjust his own sound during the uyi tour. That part was totaly new with the new guns, just like his new mic stand...

He could adjust his voice level and his monitor level with that pack, if he wanted he could have added his effect during omg too, and he could have put more distortion on buckets guitar during nightrain if he wanted to...

there's one monitor guy(who adjust the monitor level) which you don't see to often(the never mind guy at rio) and the obvious fucker out in the crowd running the mixer which you'll always see....

axl could, again, with his piece adjust both his voice level and his monitor level....

that said... it is hard for a singer to adjust his own voice level in the mix while singing, so all that screwing with the pack is basically to adjust his monitor level, nothing more...

It's like, slash do this thing with the volume nob to do the dolphin sound during estraged, but there's a guy who actually switches his efx whenever he uses em'.... you dig norway? hihi beer smoking

Some of you need a clue. The thing on this waist is for his ear piece not for his voice enhancer. You can tell he used them on the UYI tour, I have tons of bootlegs and you can hear them everywhere. So like I said Axl? used voice enhancers on the UYI? tour too. Just listen to his screams on LALD from the UYI tour, you will hear it being used.?

here's a clue for you dave, how is it possible for you too actually hear that Axl adjusts his ear piece, noone but axl hears his ear piece.

tell me about one boot from the uyi tour where you can see axl's waist pack, it's not there man because he didn't adjust it himself.

i think that the crew back then was much more tight than on the last tour, there was not much for axl to adjust, he barely even showed up to soundcheck and that says alot about the confident in the crew.

during rir3, vma medley and the festival gigs you can hear and see that axl adjust his pack alot more than lets say boston, msg etc., maybe because the venues have a different setup because other play at the same stage the same night etc.

and it is possible to have controll over your voice level and monitor level and efx with a waist pack like that, i believe that he only uses it to adjust his monitor level tho since the guy out in the crowd has a much better chance of hearing how it's supposed to be...

on the uyi boots that i have they basically adjust the sound to perfection during the first song, at least thats what i can make out of it...

 peace

Again  you need to get a clue, his ear piece and the effects on his voice ARE NOT THE SAME THING.
You do know the differece between something that you use on your voice and something you put into your ear right?

Like I said Axl had voice effects on the UYI tour.

I dont know why people are making a big deal about this. The only kind of enhancement I can hear on the new tour that Axl uses is the echoing effect he uses on JUngle and maybe liek 1 or 2 others. Other than that its Axl.

The thing on his wasit/back has to do with his sound piece. If you watch a lot of the boots hes always messing around with that and then directly to his ear peice.

i never stated that there was anything else than the control over his ear piece on that waist pack, only that it could be if he wanted too, just like you can have guitar efects on the floor or have a gay change it, if you read my post again you'll see that i write "i believe that he only uses it to adjust his monitor level" which means i think he uses his waist pack to adjust the level of sound in his ear piece.

Yeah, and sometimes when a band uses technology, that is labeled as industrial music.

No, I mean recording technologies. Not music itself, but rather the global sound quality.
