In rock i mostly prefer the base-line to be simple, especially midtempo songs\parts and ballads,
but complex stuff to if the music part is very bassorintated, like effects and themes

what do you think of tommy's playing and what type of bass playing fits you most in this genre?

Tommy did a descent job i concert with gnr imo  Cool

Well, me thinks Tommy mate ain't bad. Musically, I like him, specially the way he plays bass during Rock In Rio "The Blues" (during the whole song). It's the version that fits best to hear Tommy playing. As for bass in general, I don't like simple bass lines (although sometimes it's what fits the song best). My faves are Flea (zee best in biz now, IMHO), Fieldy from Korn, Duff (of course), Tom Hamilton from A-Smith.

As a lifelong Mats fan, I would suggest you go out and listen to all the Replacements cds and the Perfect/Bash N' Pop stuff as well. If you want to hear simple bass lines and good meldoies, there is no other band, period.

I mean to come from 12 years old on "Sorry Ma" to Chinese Democracy (at least the songs we all saw/heard live), he's got some excellent skills and has come a helluva long way. Technically, he's no Flea or Geddy, but I think he makes it up tenfold in feeling and such.

Tommy said so..... ok

Amen to that. With the Replacements, his bass is quite in the forefront so it's a nice way to get an idea of his playing.
I also recommend the Bash & Pop album if you're into the Faces, old Stones, stuff like that. I got it recently and it's a real grower.
