Hi,
Ok. I know the SCOM solo is in E Harmonic minor (or D#, if standard)... But what i want to know is how the E harmonic minor fits into the D Major scale. It's not the relative minor key... So can you play the harmonic/melodic minor scale of any note in the D Major scale, for D? I'm confused Huh Embarrassed

the fast licks are in E minor pentatonic I guess...

But the notes he uses are still from scales; the natural minor and the harmonic minor.  And there is a key change (you'll see if you look at the chords played under the solo) which is why we suddenly go from D to E.

Again, I have to say how E Aeolian? Isn't it the E Dorian scale that fits in D? And how did he pluck the D# out of nowhere and make it sound cool? Hmmm, E Aeolian looks like D with a flattened 7th. Ok now i'm more confused... Damn! no

E Aeolian fits because at the start of the solo section, as Miz pointed out earlier, the key of the song changes from D to E. If you look at the chords behind the first bit of the solo (Em, C, B7, Am repeated 4 times), you can easily see how E Aeolian fits over it. The B7 chord in there features a D# note, so that's where that note (as part of the E harmonic minor scale) in the solo comes from; if you listen carefully Slash only plays the D# note in his solo while Izzy is playing a B7 chord in the rhythm. It's all very well thought out.

Basically forget about the key of D when the solo starts (after the last chorus), it's all E minor scales (Aeolian, Harmonic Minor, Pentatonic) from there on in.

for sweet child o' mine... i can play pretty much all the way through, but when the key changes in the final solo that's where it gets tricky for me.  so what do you guys do?  i don't have a problem with the first part of the solo, but the part when he first steps on the wah pedal (you know that fast run in the key change?) that gets me.  it's pretty quick, so it shouldn't be tough to memorize i guess.  the rest of the solo isn't too bad, just long.  so do you guys have the rest of the solo memorized note for note, or do you memorize only little licks here and there and piece them together to create what sounds like the solo in your head while you're playing?  just wondering really.  i plan on getting the whole thing down sooner or later, but wanted to see what you all have done as far as playing the song.

It's my favourite song so yeah, I know that entire fucking song note by note (I think...). It's not as tough as it sounds... Trust me... Just a little practice needed though...
