Negative Creep, why are you in the setlist?

Do any of you think that there's a possibility that VR covering Negative Creep is a slight regarding Axl, and one of the reasons they chose to play it at every show?

And they don't play it at every show. In fact, they didn't play it in Stockholm.

But it is interesting in the sense that GN'R covered songs from bands they grew up listening to. VR occasionally covers the Sex Pistols, Cheap Trick (both bands from when the guys were growing up) and then the song by Nirvana which is from the late 80s.

Agreed... but what I like about VR's version of NC, is that it is now a hard rock song.  I genuinely hate the 'sound' of Nirvana's guitars and shit, so the song never appealed to me, but now I like it coz of the sound of the Les Pauls and Marshalls.

I for one think many of them were influenced by Sex Pistols. I'm not sure if Nirvana influenced them in the same way.

Even "TSI?" had a song from the late 80s which was kinda weird.

Oh, and the fact that it's Nirvana is even more interesting when you see all the anti-Nirvana posts on this GN'R board.

It's funny, Jarmo, that you mention the Sex Pistols, for they surely were also an influence on Nirvana.  I can imagine that Kurt may have been listening to a lot of Never Mind the Bollocks when he wrote "Negative Creep."  It truly is a kick-ass song, and VR's version is an amazing tribute.  They sure sound like they're having a lot of fun playing it.

As for Axl, I think in a very indirect way he has something to do with Velvet Revolver covering Nirvana.  Remember, all of GN'R, including Axl, were Nirvana fans back in the day.  Axl was upset because Kurt - foolishly - snubbed him and then proceeded to start talking smack about GN'R.  Remember, though, Duff was one of the very last people to see Kurt alive on that flight back to Seattle.  Duff sat next to him on the plane and was even going to give him a ride home before Kurt disappeared on him at the airport.  Shortly thereafter, Kurt killed himself (or was murdered).  That must have had a very profound effect on Duff.  Slash never stopped loving Nirvana, and is also a huge Courtney Love fan (lord only knows why).  Plus, Weiland and STP became big not too long after Nirvana as part of the "alternative revolution."  One can only guess if STP or any of the other bands of the era would have ever made it big if it weren't for Nirvana's breakthrough.  So, playing "Negative Creep" is not only a tribute to a great musician and band, it's also a way for Slash and Duff to "make peace" with Kurt after the feud between the two bands back then.  For Weiland, it may be a way of saying "thank you" to Kurt and Nirvana.  I understand the band is also friendly with Dave Grohl.  I doubt they really care what Axl thinks about it.  This just goes to show how much class Slash & Duff have.  I hope they keep the song in their setlists for many years to come, it rocks!
