Mr. Matt Sorum...
i dont like him to be honest, has anyone ever noticed on Illusion that ALL the drum fills and intro's he does (did) are all the same. Kinda like 14 years intro but.........aaaaaaahhhhhhh, i dont know how to explane it......they are just all the same.

His drum solo on Tokyo Vid was/is fuckin' unbeleivable, but speaking as a musician my self, after a while i noticed that when he does a drum solo, he rely's too much on his double kick to keep you interested in it. I watched Matt's solo n' then i compared it too other drummer's  solo's not to long ago and some other drummers are all over the place, they dont need the double kick to get into it....

I think i should take this to the musician board 'cause i dont think many of you would have a clue what im on about... Undecided

help me out, what do you think??? beer

I like Matt, I know alot of his fills are very similar, but they worked on the UYI songs.

He's a solid rock drummer, but there are many better drummers out there.

i think the reason why mat did that same fill over and over in many songs is 'cuz axl wanted him to be that kind of drummer. matt said so himself, axl wanted john bonham kinda drumming (or whatevah his name is)...

listen to Neurotic Outsiders and the newest Cult album... those album fucking rocks!!

i think that if they are going to cut out a drum solo, cut out the fucking guitar solo!! those are ONLY for showing off.. and they are really boring. i never ever liked slash's solo! only when it was Godfather.....

Matts a great drummer. i think he is un appreciated.  lets face it,he was there when   GNR needed him, although i like Steve i doubt he would have been able to handle himself for a tour as long as the illusions

I have mixed feelings about Matt with Gn'R.  I think he's a better fit than Brain, and he was actually a trained, polished drummer, as opposed to Steven who had the right feel but was sloppy as hell, especially live.

At the VR show last night though, Matt absolutely kicked fucking ass.  That part about Axl telling him to play a certain way may have been right, because while certain aspects of it felt like the same band, Matt was playing better, more inventively, and more passionately than I think he ever did in Gn'R.  He really did prove to be a great drummer.

He also sang amazing harmonies during the VR show.  I had no idea the guy could sing, but he hit some solid high notes and his voice blended with Weiland's extremely well.  On top of his kickass drumming, that was a nice added bonus.

He also proved to be a really nice guy when I met him after the show...I think he's really happy to have this VR thing finally going.

I think Matt was just honored to be in GnR when they were recording the UYI albums. I am sure Axl had "drum fills" in his head and made Matt play them.  Axl is a perfectionist and things need to go his way. Or the tour is off and hes going home on the highway.

For all the flack Matt gets (some of it from me), I have to hand it to the guy for stepping up to the plate and touring with a band such as Guns N Roses, at the time when they were the biggest band in the world.  That was a big step, since Cult (all due respect) wasn't exactly a headlining act, much less a stadium filler.  Matt must get due credit for that.

But as far as playing goes, Matt Sorum is too "technically proficient" for his own good.  I hear those words constantly being used to describe him, and my response is that you can have too much of a good thing.  Matt's style is a very ostentacious style, as if he were saying "Hey look at me!  Look how fast and hard I can beat the drums!", rather than being concerned with playing his part and not going overboard, which is what he often did.

A truly great drummer knows when not to play his instrument.  That's what sets Steven a cut above Matt.  Steven didn't need to crash cymbals and hammer needless fills at every turn.  He just played exactly what was needed for the song, no more, no less.  That's what a great drummer does.

As far as the fills on UYI go, I liked the intros to "You Could Be Mine" and "Shotgun Blues", but the others were superfluous.

Steven's more simplistic, loose style on the 1986 live performances of "Don't Cry" was much better suited for that song, along with all the other early recordings of UYI songs I've heard with Steven on drums.

Several UYI songs were played live with Steven, and some others were recorded with demos.  IMO, all of them sound better with Steven on drums.  That chemistry is still there.

That was a big step, since Cult (all due respect) wasn't exactly a headlining act, much less a stadium filler.  Matt must get due credit for that.

Being the resident Cult freak, they actually had been headlining shows in the states since '87 when they took GNR on the road with them.  The "Sonic Temple" tour had them headlining everywhere from MSG in NYC to the Forum in LA (multiple nights).
Same for the "Ceremony", tour arenas all over the states with Lenny Kravitz as support.

No stadiums headlines on this side of the pond though, that's for sure.

Matt's jump to GNR came with Billy Duffy's full approval, they weren't sure if they were going to use him in the studio and never offered him full membership.  Billy gave him his blessing and off he went, a great career move for sure..

God, imagine Don?t Cry with Steven. It would have been awsome.I think the best drum-song from the UYI albums is Civil War.And who plays drums  in CW??
STEVEN
The best fucking drummer!!
Also think about 14 years and Dust n?Bones with Steven!!
That would have been great!!
