Could somebody give me a brief synopsis of what the festival really is and how it began.  I realize that this must be a pretty important event cuz Axl and Co. seem to be pretty into it.  When and how did it start?  Is it a benefit for someone/somebody, or just a good reason to have a bunch of bands together (like Woodstock,etc.)

1985, Rio, 250,000 attendance, Queen played a kickass set (as ever) and I think they headlined...

Ozzy Osbourne also peformed both nights at the original Rock in Rio.   Cool

January 16 and 19 were the dates in 1985.
