This is a multi-part question:
How would you compare Trent Reznor and Axl Rose? What are their similarities and differences?
To me, they both seem t be the tortured, temperamental, artistic type. They both seem to be perfectionists and express their torment through their music.
Does anyone have any quotes that Axl Rose has said about Trent Reznor or vice versa? I have a little NIN fan book and Trent said (around) 1991, that Axl was a friend of his and asked him to do some shows in Europe. Reznor also said something like (paraphrasing) ?someone would say to Axl, ?excuse me Mr. Rose, that turd smells a little off, would you like me to flush it for you.?? But I also remember him saying that he ?respects? Axl.
Even though both bands are from different genres, they seem to have crossed paths quite a bit?the tour, Robin Finck.
Also, a lot of GN?R fans seem to like NIN.
IMHO
AFD=Pretty Hate Machine
GN'R Lies=Broken
Use Your Illusion=The Fragile

so
how would i compare....well.....they're both fuckin' cool in my books......the only link between them is that Axl loves NIN n' Chris Vrenna from NIN played drums for a while n' Robin Finck is the man on guit.
I believe Chris said at some point that Chinese Demcracy is more Appitite then you think

i think Trent Reznor is much more normal than axl rose.
Trent seems like a nice normal man.
not troubled at all.
Nin fans like to think that NIN music is troubled and deep and dark.
NIN is good because it's POP. It's catchy and poppy
- just listen to gave up ! -
On the other hand, axl is much more original and special - in terms of rock star -
both bands are cool tho. but i really dont compare the two music, they're from two different world.

True. The Old Guns cant compared with NIN. Two different bands. But i guess the new GNR have alot more NIN influence. The Synth, Robin in the band. Industrial touches and so on.. lets just wait and see.

I think when the band returns they will be more "Rock" and less "industrial"/weirdo than in 2002. You know that industrial direction was one of the reason why it didn't work so well in 2002 (see the Detroit Show). It was too weirdo. BH out is a good thing that goes in that direction. Come-back to the fundamentals: a Rock band is a cohesive bunch of guys. I also bet Robin will have a different style and won't be the goth of 2002. I also think heavy-industrial songs like "silkworms" will never be played Live again.
The new band will be less industrial than in 2002. Both in their music and in their image. Modern touch don't mean turning industrial, you can modernize your music in a good way (see U2- achtung baby erea)

I would hardly call anything modern industrial.
The Industrial "boom" came around in '94 when NIN put out The Downward Spiral.
So that's 11 years ago. Hardly modern.
And to call it "weirdo" music is pretty fucking stupid.
If Axl has put so much time into a CD that is nothing but 2 guitars, drums, and bass, I think I'll be disappointed. I mean... why would something that simple take so much time.
I hope he gets creative. It doesn't have to be as heavy as NIN, it could be more of a Pink Floyd type thing. Like... just playing with sounds and creating atmospheres.
That would be great.
In my mind anyway

hey i think thats true i got into NIN because i was GNR fan and read about axl becoming obsessed with them. i never thought i would be a fan i always thought NIN was weird and goth or whatever but once i listened to the music it blew me away, now NIN are one of my fave bands right up there with GNR.
i think they are fairly similar, they both are perfectionists and hide away from the public eye alot, and they both make music to make music, not for the money, they do it for themselves.

Trent use to bash the fuck outta his bandmembers mate...seriously
plus, he just spent the last god knows how long tryin' ta get off drugs n' shit, if anyone was troubled it was Trent.
In an Aussie interview he admitted he was to scared to make music without drugs n' its been a long time comin'.
Gave up Live is my fav. song, never thought anyone would describe it pop but

Not seeing too many similarities whatsoever.
Quite opposite really.
Axl's a collaborator, Trent's a one man gang.
Trent's influences range from Adam Ant to Alain Jourgensen, Axl's are more in line with Elton John and Freddie Mercury.
Axl's music is much more accessible, Trent's is an aquired taste.
Trent's communicates with his fans, Axl does not.
Their public perceptions are vastly different, draw your own conclusions.
I could go on..

personally i love both bands (although i'm partial to gn'r) and i do agree on the similarities..
to the people who think trent isn't that troubled... have you listened to the lyrics to pretty hate machine? everytime i hear that album all i can think of is, man, that dude has ISSUES.
i think they're very much alike, reclusive, perfectionistic, egomaniacs, each respectively musical geniuses.
and uh, btw, they both make 'pop' music, (hello ever heard of appetite for desruction?) it's just pop music that happens to be good. it happens rather rarely that way though.
and uh, axl isn't relly much of a collaborator. i mean he'll take in other people's efforts but it has to be the way he wants it type thing..

Yes, definitely. Guns N' Roses music is very "democratic", it's for everybody, the music is so good that you can love it even if you are a rapper.
NIN music is not accessible at all.

A few more differences..
Axl's classic love song: "Oh, Oh, Oh sweet chld o mine"..
Trents idea of a love song: "I want to fuck you like an animal"..
From all accounts, Axl's been clean for years, Trent's just fresh off cocaine addiction..
From recent sightings, Trent's could be on the cover of Men's Health magazine, as of Dec. '02, Axl needed to buy a Men's Health magazine..

But what about "We're in this together," from "The Fragile?" That seems to show a far more sensitive side of Trent. Also, I would argue that while GN?R is more assessable than NIN, NIN isn?t all that much less assessable, or an acquired taste. There are tons of NIN that are very assessable and radio friendly:
-Head Like a Hole
-Terrible Lie
-Sin
-Closer- One of the biggest hits of the 90s
-Hurt- see above
-Into the Void
-Bite the Hand that Feeds
-Only
Trent being in better shape than Axl is just a superficial difference.
As far as influences go, I?ll give you that Axl has been more influenced by bands like Aerosmith and Deep Purple, and Trent by Adam Ant, Gary Numan, etc, but Axl has a very eclectic taste in music and in the past he may not have been exposed to that type of music, being from Indiana and all.

NIN covered a Queen song, Axl sang at the Freddie Mercury Tribute and Queen is a huge influence on him.
Both bands released EPs after their debut album.
