Guns N' Roses Vs. Kanye West: Axl's Got A Secret Weapon In The Race For #1
Chinese Democracy's label is making a sly move to beat 808s & Heartbreak in first-week sales.
By Chris Harris

It was shaping up to be an epic battle between two of music's biggest heavyweights, with Kanye West ? the Louis Vuitton Don, and the man we crowned the Hottest MC in the Game ? standing in one corner, wearing the gold trunks and white Shutter Shades, ready to drop 808s & Heartbreak. And in the other: Axl Rose ? sporting the black trunks, a Los Angeles Raiders jersey, red cornrows and a little album called Chinese Democracy.

Who will walk away with the championship belt? Chances are, it won't be 'Ye.

Fans are excited, critics and industry watchers look on with great anticipation, and even oddsmakers have jumped into the fray, casting Guns N' Roses as the favorite. But, at the 11th hour, GN'R are making things a bit interesting in this race toward Billboard's peak position. That's because Axl's got a secret weapon: the Eighth Day.

After years of false starts and broken promises, Geffen Records will finally issue Guns N' Roses' eagerly awaited album this coming Sunday, a day before West's latest hits stores. And a spokesperson for Geffen told MTV News that first-day sales figures for Chinese Democracy will not be reported to Nielsen SoundScan until November 30, the same day West's label will report his week-one sales.

Typically, albums are released in the U.S. on Tuesdays, and SoundScan tracks weekly sales data from Monday through Sunday, meaning that most albums' debut spots on the Billboard chart are based on six solid sales days. At first, most assumed day-one sales of Chinese Democracy ? which took Rose more than 16 years to complete ? would be reported next week and released the morning of November 26. But GN'R's label is holding off on releasing those sales figures until the following week, setting the stage for an extra boost in the chart standings announced on December 3.

West's only chance at a third consecutive #1 debut is the fact that Chinese Democracy will be available exclusively at Best Buy's Web site and stores, whereas 808s will be everywhere.

This is a different game from last fall, when Kanye and 50 Cent released solo albums on the very same day. After weeks of hype leading up to their showdown, West's Graduation pushed 957,000 copies, easily besting Curtis, which sold 691,000 copies in week one.

Before Geffen's plan was known, MTV News reached out to U.K. betting company Ladbrokes and online-gaming purveyors Bodog Entertainment to see which album they favor for a #1 opening. Despite West's immense popularity, the numerous leaks of Chinese Democracy over the years and GN'R's Best Buy deal, oddsmakers from both companies said Guns' LP has the best chance of scoring a chart-topping debut.

Bodoglife.com Sportsbook manager Richard Gardner put the odds at -130 in favor of Guns ? which is basically the same thing as saying there's a 56 percent chance that Axl will outsell West. Meanwhile, he put the odds at -110 for a Kanye West win, or a 52 percent chance that his album will enter the chart at the peak position.

"We would quote 1/3 on Guns N' Roses, and 5/2 on Kanye West," said Nick Weinberg, head of Ladbrokes' novelty betting division. "So we make Guns N' Roses the favorite to top the charts in the week immediately after the release, due to the massive sense of anticipation surrounding the album. A lot of people have been waiting a long time for it."

ONE FOR FIVE: In a major disappointment for IGA, the company will have to wait until 2009 to release those much-anticipated albums from Eminem, Dr. Dre, Black Eyed Peas and the just-bumped 50 Cent, with only Guns N? Roses arriving in time to spike the long-dominant company?s languishing marketshare. To that end, a second single has been rushed out after the first came up short on the radio front. (11/20a)

ADD IGA: One bright spot this year has been the James Diener-led A&M/Octone, with Flyleaf, Maroon 5 and the breaking Hollywood Undead. (11/20a)

RUN FOR THE ROSES: IGA is hoping for a 600k debut on the Guns N? Roses release, which kicks off what is shaping up as one of the biggest sales weeks in ages. The physical sales generated by the band?s Best Buy exclusive will be further spiked by what is expected to be a huge iTunes number. A total in that range could put Guns in a duel with Kanye West, whose album streets next Monday (11/24), along with those of IDJ labelmates The Killers and Ludacris. (11/19p)

Is hitting #5 on Billboard coming up short?  Although it slid back to #6 this week, "Chinese Democracy" did go top 5 on Billboard.  I think that's a good thing.

I hope "Chinese Democracy" sells at least 600K.  We'll see.

As much as I love GNR, I really think Kanye will end up at number but who knows.

I absolutely can't stand Kanye West.  His lyrics are terrible.  "I know I can't get much wronger..." from that "Stronger" song?  I mean cmon...get with with program here...

Tupac is probably rolling around in his grave right now looking at what's happened to the "rap" industry...it's pathetic...

Yeah, I agree.  I wouldn't be surprised.  Who knows how much that extra day will help GN'R.  It is an advantage, though.  We'll see.

I'll be upset if Kanye West somehow ends up #1. I can't stand the guy as it is. He's an overrated, annoying, pompous asshole. If Chinese Democracy wasn't a Best Buy exclusive, I don't even think it'd be close.

I mean, AC/DC has sold a shit load with their Wal-Mart exclusive, but there are probably 5 Wal-Marts to every Best Buy. For instance, I live about 3 minutes from a Wal-Mart, but the closest Best Buy is about a 30 minute drive (in which I pass at least 3 more Wal-Marts). Hopefully that won't stop most people from going out and getting the album.

And I don't know for sure, but wasn't "Stronger" released as a single before Kanye's album came out? I remember hearing that song everywhere, so I'm sure that's why the album sold so much out of the gate. I haven't heard any new Kanye West single on the radio (although I haven't exactly sough it out, either).

I don't think Kanye West is going to sell nearly as many copies this time around as his last couple of albums.  Singing the whole album on a vocoder is going to lose sales amongst rap fans.  Teenage girls will still buy it but teenage guys are going to buy a lot fewer copies this time around, and those are his two biggest audiences

No way Kanye beats GNR. I can't believe some people are still doubting this album. It will move 1+ mil copies the first week. Some people here are just too pessimistic.

AC/DC had the biggest one week sale of a rock album in years.  784,000....  If GNR tops that with little promotion, that will be damn impressive.

I don't think 'Chinese Democracy' will sell the 957,000 that 'Graduation' did... Probably not even that close... But then neither will Kanye's new album, so it will be a question of how much he drops off vs how much GnR sell. He's had a good run for the last few years and is probably due a bit of a sales drop.

I'm not convinced there's that much direct competition for audience between the two either, but I guess there will be some at the younger end of the market in particular. In that situation the long wait for the new GnR might make it the first of the two that fans of both acts buy. It will be interesting to see how it goes for sure...

that a bit much. my estimate is 300k-450k. kanye now has strong opposition from other rap "artists"( if you want to embellish and call them that).... like lupe fiasco, lil wayne and others. kanye definitely doesn't have that selling power anymore. plus he's trying to sing... and he sounds like ass.
