and I thought they captured 90s South Central LA (and LA, San Francisco, and Las Vegas in general) very well.
I suppose dissing SA's failure to capture what it pursues is unfair if you are European. I have a hunch it takes a yankee to fully feel the whole "surprisingly tense early 90's in L.A" - thing. It's not something you continuously keep stumbling on when consuming pop-culture, it remains a bit alien.
..Whereas everyone feels right at home in Vice City, Scarface, Miami Vice, whatnot. Average person has tons of beacons that guide you to right mood.
Story line was one of the things that pissed me off in SA. The story tried too hard to be very ambitious and serious and present through the whole thing.
I think it's a very bad idea to build a serious plot around general emoing around regarding death of someone when fun of the entire game is in killing an assload of people
