Our landlord painted the tub in our bathroom before we moved in and it's all chipping off. I was wondering if anyone knows a way to get the paint off safely without harming the tub underneath.

Thanks!

If you do use strippers, use safety precautions. Some strippers contain known carcinogens, e,g; MEK.

First off, you need to ask your landlord if what type of paint he used.  If it was oil based or water based.  If it was oil based then you should use paint stripper, acetone or varous other agents - ask the clerk at a paint store....if is water based you won't need to use those chemicals....ask the clerk at a paint store for the best way to take it off.

Call the landlord and tell him he can pick up his rent check when he's done fixing the tub.

Painted it? Or reglazed it?

I would not try and chip this off. I'd call the landlord and tell him the problem asap.

Rent a pressure washer from a tool rental place.

A pressure washer inside the home? That's very Caddyshackish of you...

Buy some paint stripper?

I wouldn't go using paint stripper until you know what it is. People usually don't paint a tub.

Stay away from tubs and stick to men's interstate restrooms.

Yeah, I agree.  I can't think of a reason to "paint" a bathtub.  Reglaze (or epoxy)? Sure.  Paint?  No siree, bob.

If the glaze/epoxy is chipping, the landlord did a crappy job and needs to come over and fix it (or get someone who knows WTF they're doing to fix it, preferably).  Unless you've negotiated some reduction in your rent to cover supplies and your time, I wouldn't recommend EVER doing "apartment repairs" beyond fixing damage you've done, yourself.  Because if you fuck it up.....or those you hire fuck it up...you KNOW the landlord is coming after you for the costs of repair, either directly or out of your security deposit.

Call the landlord...tell him/her it needs fixing.  Give 'em a month. or so, to do it.   Then call and tell them that, until it's fixed, you're depositing your rent check into an escrow account in both your names until it's fixed.

In addition, trust me when I say you really, really don't want to do this job..even if you're a homeowner.  This is one of those jobs you leave to the professionals, unless you have a ton of experience in this area.  Usually you need to sandblast the damn thing (assuming it's porcelin or some sort of hard enamel).  In addition, the 2 part epoxy "paints" (which aren't, really...) are smelly, nasty, dangerous chemical compounds to work with....that are not made to be brushed on (you'd need a high powered sprayer for application).   Doing all that in your bathroom isn't something even many pros will want to tackle....

The fact that your landlord might have done it himself speaks VOLUMES about why it's probably chipping. Smiley

IF I were going to "paint a tub"......an ACTUAL tub, not the surrounding dry wall area.....I think you might have to be brain damaged to use water based paint.  On the flip side, I don't think you'd necessarily be all there if you decided to paint a bathtub unless you were engaging in some sort of crazy modern art project......

When you reglaze something, you can use a paintbrush or small roller. So I'm going to guess he did not paint it, but reglazed it.

Reglazing a sink or a tub is easy to screw up, even if you take your time. It can bubble and eventually peel.

He/She probably assumed it would be similar to painting and did a quick job, hence the chipping. Whatever you do, don't chip at it, and don't put stripper on it.

Yeah I think it was glaze not paint sorry. The reason for it being done was my landlord wanted the color the match the color of the toilet. It just looks so ugly chipping away I just want the white tub underneath. She new about it when we moved in, afterall she was the one who pointed it out. She told us she tried to get it off but couldn't find anything to get it off.

In addition, if you don't:

1) Clean the surface correctly (hydrofluoric acid  and 120 grit sand work well) and completely (meaning NO dust, dirt, grit, etc left)

2) Use body filler to fill in any gouges, etc (because, if you leave them, the epoxy is just going to form to the gouges and "crack" again).

3) Sand down and clean up the excess body filler so you've got a clean surface (which usually means a shop vac to the ENTIRE room, to get the dust, etc, out).

4) PROPERLY (as SLC says) apply the epoxy/glaze

you're going to see really crappy results.

I'm guessing your landlord didn't do 1 through 3 at all, and likely did a crappy job on 4.

Again, if you've got some experience with this type of thing (and have/can borrow/can rent the right equipment), by all means negotiate something with the landlord.  Maybe get it in writing.  And then have yourself a ball....

If not.....ask the landlord to hire a pro, or get a liner installed.

Yeesh, she screewed the pooch but good.

When you fuck it up.....there's no real way to fix it (that I know of) other than sandblasting it and starting over.  You can't just chip it away (well, you can...and reglaze..but it will be just as crappy and start chipping again) and there isn't a stripper I know of (clap, STD, or not Smiley  ) that will touch it.  That's sorta the point of glazing....creating a hard, liquid impenetrable surface.

It'd be cheaper to have one of those vinly liners installed...and I'm SURE she can find one that matches the toilet.   But I don't think there's any real way to "fix" it.  It's either going to need to be replaced, repaired professionally, or have a liner dropped in over it.

Something tells me she bought one of those "do it yourself" kits that suck donkey balls......and almost invariably lead to exactly what you're seeing.

I always would just demo it and retile, which was more fun anyway. Cheaper than hiring a pro to reglaze and much better results.

Anywho...sounds like Pilferk said, it looks like your landlord isn't really going to address this. She did a poop job and that is probably acceptable for her rental unit. Withholding rent isn't really an option since she pointed it to you, and you did not object (or did you?) In a rental you have to decide if it's worth making a fuss out of or not. Myself? I say not, not over that anyway. You can always vote with your feet, on to the next place, once your lease is up.

You could always ask her to chip away the loose stuff, then reglaze the spots again. Crappy patch job on top of a crappy job, but it's better than nothing, which is probably what she is offering you now.

Yeah, I missed the part where she pointed it out to you.  If she did...and you signed the lease...you can moan and complain but she's under no obligation to fix it now.

If it's just unsighly (and not, for example, sharp or in any way dangerous), I'd just live with it.  Buy a nice shower curtain and keep it closed when guests are over......

If it IS sharp or dangerous, you might be able to compel her to fix it...but it's probably going to cost you time, legal fees, and a ton of frustration to do it.

The question is: Is it worth it.

While I hate half assed jobs, I'm sort of inclined to go with SLC on this one:  If it HAS to be fixed, fix it as cheaply and as quickly as you can (though again, I'd get approval from your landlady FIRST.....something in writing preferably, so she can't sock you for the cost of replacing the tub when you move out) because, lets face it, it's not your house and the landlord has already done a piss poor job.  You just need to make it liveable.
