Here Today...

« on: July 10, 2007, 08:37:06 AM »

I've been enjoing LIBERTAD but am having a tough time believIng Slash played lead. To me many of the new songs lack his uniquness. I wonder if Dave Kushner took over the majority of the leads on LIBERTAD.

Well, now that you mention it, besides the solos that we've been able to see live, there are some others that really don't seem to be Slash... but, for example Let it Roll wouldn't exactly seem to be him, and I think that live he is the one who plays it??

Well, that would be sad, disappointing, and somewhat creepy if that were the case.

I think it is him. He's probably just trying new things.

Even on Slash's more mediocre offerings in the past you could depend on some crunch and serious punch from his guitars.  These characteristics are conspicuously absent on a lot of the songs on Libertad.  That's why this album is not going to appeal to a lot of people who like Slash because of what he did in GnR

Libertad will appeal to people who are diehard Slash fans who like anything he does, and probably to STP fans too, but this album aside from a couple notable exceptions really spurned the people expecting to hear more GnR style songs out of the band this time around

Slash is using some new gear on Libertad. Also the producer liked a lot of the initial takes for solos, so they're more spontaneous overall. They all still sound like Slash to me!

I don't see it in a bad way to let Dave makeing some solos on the album. But the sond like Slash to me.

If you listen carefully you will notice, specially in She Mine, that he uses a different kind of distortion. Personally, I don't like it too much.

You can easily tell its Slash when its Slash on Libertad. I know there isnt any grand moments like estranged or NR but that sort of playing wouldnt fit anyway

It's Slash, but I don't think he wrote most of Libertad.  I'm thinking Duff and Dave wrote most of the music on Libertad and Slash played it accordingly to fit in with Dave's guitar style and Scott's vocal style.

I dunno, to me the Let It Roll solo sounds like Slash playing an Angus Young (AC/DC) style solo, as does the solo in Just 16, which to me sounds pretty obvious to be Slash's style.

My main problem with Libertad is the riffing doesn't seem like Slash in parts (or it doesn't sound like he's there at all) and Dave's fuzzy/farting guitar tone clashes with Slash's cleaner tone for most of the album.

How could any Slash fan not think its Slash soloing?

Metallex, I see what you are saying with him and Dave.  I do love the album, but I can understand wanting more ballsy riffs.

Its slash guys, chill...
He dialed off some distortion and used a few different amps this time. Instead of using his mainstay JCM Slash for everything he used the ne Marshall Vintage Modern amp on a few songs. He also used a 15 watt Vox combo and as far as guitars go on some songs he used a strat and a gretsch Tennessee Rose. It's in his interviews somewhere. That is definitely slash though. Dave did play a few leads such as the intro to SBQM. Slash plays the riff while Dave hits some single notes a few octaves up/
