Well, I played WTTJ to my distance eduction student over the phone today - and he seemed a little scared. But then he gave me a bit of attitude not long after, so I guessed it worked. He thought that "Knocking on Heaven's Door" was very uplifting but it went on too long. He knocked Axl's voice which meant that he thought that it was pretty good!

I think some I'll play him some Patience next and November Rain.

Just between you and me....I am dying to play him.....Ain't It Fun.....

What grade are you teaching?  Because I just can't see a grade school child responding well to "Ain't it fun when you tell her she's just a cunt."

Year 7, so there's no way I can play it......though a kid that age would like how gutsy the song is.......nevermind.........I am giving him a his very own CD as an end of term present though - his mum can decide!

BTW I always thought the line was, ......."when you tell her she's just a cum...."!!

You were referring to the "..when you know that you're gonna die young" part, weren't you? (and if you were I wonder why no-one else caught it.)

Anyway.. Sweet Child and Paradise City are musts. Start him out with the softer stuff (read: poppier.) That'll help him more than the complicated stuff (like Coma, or to some degree like NR.)

Yeh, there are a few lyrics that I'd rather leave until he is well into his teens!

I played him Patience and November Rain the other day. Because he gets easliy frustrated, this song had a calming effect on him. He absolutely loved November Rain - and from a teaching point of view, I got him to concentrate for the full 8 minutes or so!!

Yeh, at the Adelaide concert Axl jokingly referred to YCBM as one for the mysogenists..!

14 years is a good song to use as it comes from a different stylistic point of view.

Well, sadly it's my last lesson with this great kid this week. I thought I'd play him some music before I send him off into the big wide world.....  Cry

So, my question is this -

If you were a teacher what song would you play to your students as a way of saying see ya! good luck! all the best! have a great life! etc.

Life is going to be a bit hard on him......but he has such a great spark......

Suggestions for inspiring songs?? Any music.....

I think a very fitting song would be KISS - GOD GAVE ROCK N ROLL TO YOU   ok

I can't remember the bands name but they played the song the last episode of Seinfeld - "It's something unpredictable that in the end is right, I hope you had the time of your life."

Or
I think it's the Jayhawks - Symphony of Life - it's a bitter sweet symphoney that's life - try to make ends meet, you're a slave to the money then you die.

Or
If you want to go back to the 50's for a final song - To Sir With Love (corny but popular then, plus we sang it to a teacher, I know it's reeking of cheese)
Or
Modest Mouse - Float On - talks about all the crap that happens every day and how sometimes nothing happens and everything is alright

That's Green Day's "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)"

I ended up playing:

What About Me (Moving Pictures), We Are The Champions (Queen), Ego is not a dirty word (Skyhooks), Don't Cry and Paradise City (after which he said, "I can play the CD on my computer through my sub!").

I also wanted to play Better (The Screaming Jets), Dream Police (Cheap Trick), Turn Up your Radio (The Masters Apprentices), Guitar Band (Stevie Wright), My Generation (The Who) and Imagine (John Lennon).

I also had my last lesson with two of my female students, sending them off with Abba's Dancing Queen!

 ok
