In the new Rolling Stone (their 40th anniversary issue) they list the 40 songs that changed the world. Sweet Child O Mine is listed. This is not a ranked list.

They didn't say anything about it. They merely listed it.

It looks to me like they are listed in chronological order, or at least by decade. As usual, I think their list stinks. Why "Whole Lotta Love" by Zeppelin instead of "Stairway To Heaven"? Stairway is the most requested song in FM radio history. Makes you go, "WTF?" when you think about. I guess it's because "Whole Lotta Love" was one of the few singles Zeppelin ever released, and it was a very successful single at that.

From the magazine...
Why The World Needed It: The flood of L.A. bad boys with huge hair needed to demonstrate that their romantic side was as earnest as their violent streak.
Why It Matters: GNR were the apotheosis of the LA metal band, and Axl Rose's tormented ode to then girlfriend Erin Everly is the peak of the eighties metal mountain - it single-handedly justifies the existence of the Sunset Strip's soft-hearted hard living headbangers.
Without this song, No: Velvet Revolver, Buckcherry, Korn, Chinese Democracy. (oh wait.)

I for one can say it's the one Gn'R song that carries the most emotion with me. I've told my own personal story here before, concerning "hooking up" again with an ex-girlfriend at a party while that song played on the radio in original, 1988 rotation. I feel lucky to have lived a late-teen and early-adult life during the band's heyday.
As far as Live shows go, I can recall at all of the 2006 shows that the crowd sang louder and sang the most lyrics during SCOM than any other song on the set list. It gives me goose bumps when I think about that song and the crowd singing along.
You can hear the crowd singing here...

I don't think I'll ever understand the appeal of SCOM beyond the opening riff. It's a nice song and all, but it doesn't really excite me. Still, plaudits are plaudits.

Really? That's one of the few songs that I consider to be 'Perfect', brilliant opening riff, solo and the outro is one of the best. Of course, I'm biased.

Oh...........I think many people didn't like this song because it made GNR so mainstream and such a huge commercial success.....But it is absolutely a perfect kick ass song. Slash's solos are incredible but what really makes the song is how great Izzys parts are......

WTF?!
LOL!
No it's not... the guitars are the most prominent part of the song and the vocals are also top notch.
Sorry man ... izzy's parts are cool ... but the two lead's on that song take the crown...
