You've found something worse? I'm almost afriad to ask - what is it? Star Trek Voyager?

On the one hand, yeah, that was cutesy and even a little funny. But it was more Izzy than anything else, so I'm going to have to make a stand here and tell you for the umpteenth time to go get an opinion of your own.

Seriously, if I ever want your opinion on something, all I have to do is Google it... Undecided

Voyager... Roll Eyes

Let's play a game here. I want any real Trekkers who might be lurking in the shadows to swoop in and tell us all why Janeway and co. are a lovely bunch to spend time with. Then we'll all point and laugh at Izzy and ask to borrow his copy of Cynicism for Dummies.

THEN, we'll all laugh some more when he tells me to go get some new lines.

Then, when he accuses the pot of calling the kettle black, we'll all laugh one more time because we knew it was coming. And we know that's funny... yes

Seriously now, Iz, what's your case against Voyager?

good ole v'ger

well they really explored the gritter side of star trek. sure some might say sisco and gang done the grit, but they were in the sit fighting to save humainty from the ever winning domnion.

what janeway had as the loss of all things human while finding what it truely means to be a future human.... the trials the battles the strange worlds, it truely showed huan substance in an unknown world the way shatner done it as kirk in ToS

What an odd response even for u....

It was a joke - MCT likes Star Trek, joke with Voyager reference - MCT will appreciate the 'in-joke' - Yeah? No? Damn....

I did happen to watch all 170 odd episodes of Voyager, am i entitled to an opinion on it? No?

My case against Voyager? How about moral dilemmas that wouldn't tax a five year old, a nice happy tea time viewing feel that sucked any kind of tension they were aiming for? A commendable set of values scuppered by blatant hypocrisy - no holodecks for you, but you, hmm.....oh well, have fun with them! Costume design that went beyond the cliche - strange forehead bump, and nothing else?

The show should have explored Federation values in an uncaring environment, struggling to cope with no supplies, without hope - but the ship was always immaculate (intrestingly on the orders of Paramount who over ruled Brannon Braga's request to have the ship battered and broken all the time), they managed to get through 50 shuttles to the amusement of even the cast themselves

Oh and there was that other problem of generally poor writing (Threshold anyone? Elogium?) and a cast that hardly fired the imagination - when Kirk fooled those Romulan scallywags he had some devilish plan executed with flair, Janeways' 'target shields' was Voyager's equivalent

But chiefly, Star Trek is a mirror for todays society - its far less about tommorow than the casual fan would assume.

Voyager was just 1980's values - which worked for TNG, (strangely enough made during the 80's): The faith in technology and its ability to improve life, the confidence of the west in its values and government etc etc)

The 90's saw the end of the 'me' decade, and new challenges - an increasing cycnism towards technology, the old certainties of who 'the enemy' was gone with the collapse of the USSR, and as the 90's marched on an interest in darker themes catapulting shows like the X files into the mainstream

DS9 clumsily attempted to adapt to this but could never let go of a formulae

Voyager never even tried, it was TNG all over again and by the 7th series in looked tired, out of date, irrelevant and very much in the 'been there, done that' style

Is that good enough an answer?

No trouble to tell it was getting close to Christmas when you posted this, you being so generous with your humor and all...

READ:

On the one hand, yeah, that was cutesy and even a little funny.

...confused...

I did happen to watch all 170 odd episodes of Voyager, am i entitled to an opinion on it? No?

Too bad that sense of entitlement failed to produce any original thoughts. But that's no surprise. As I predicted, your opinions are as Googleable as Pamela Anderson's tits... Undecided

My case against Voyager? How about moral dilemmas that wouldn't tax a five year old

To keep it simple, you might as well throw everything from TOS to Enterprise into the same mix. Because the exploration of the nobility of Human virtue in Voyager is no better or worse than that of any of its predecessors or of it's lone successor. And that's just a fact.

a nice happy tea time viewing feel that sucked any kind of tension they were aiming for?

That one gets bandied about quite a bit in robotic detractor circles. But the truth of the matter is that this feel made Voyager the most consummately enjoyable of all the Star Trek series'. It was a well-balanced presentation of adventure, of the unknown. Never mind the lack of true grit. DS9 filled that hole. Besides, science fiction is not all about dire warnings. It's about optimism as well. It's about the hope that our children and their institutions will be better than us and ours. That is, after all, our goal as a global society.

As for tension, it was there. You just didn't see it so much in the day to day comings and goings of the people residing in the ship. This was due to the way Janeway ran the show. She was the most rigid and the most loyal of all the captains in terms of adhering to the sometimes transcendental ideals of the Federation. Hence, the ship was nice and cozy.

<Jacob Marley voice> Look outside...outside the ship, Izzy.

Oh, and last time I checked, Peecard wasn't in command of this show. So deal with it on its own terms, not those of TNG.

A commendable set of values scuppered by blatant hypocrisy - no holodecks for you, but you, hmm.....oh well, have fun with them!

At the fringes, a captain's authority is important. Such is the way the microcosmic societies of Federation starships are run. Especially if they're far away from home. The end.

Costume design that went beyond the cliche - strange forehead bump, and nothing else?

You've stumbled across the ubiquitous nature of popular science fiction in general, not of Voyager specifically. Open your eyes, my son! There's no real point of contention here...

The show should have explored Federation values in an uncaring environment, struggling to cope with no supplies

 hihi

It did!

without hope

The whole point of the series was hope, you genious you!

 rofl

Fuck, Star Trek is about hope!

Oh my... hihi

Listen, dire warnings or no, it's all about optimism, perseverance against chaos...LIFE AS WE KNOW IT.

You crazy loon... Kiss

but the ship was always immaculate (intrestingly on the orders of Paramount who over ruled Brannon Braga's request to have the ship battered and broken all the time), they managed to get through 50 shuttles to the amusement of even the cast themselves

We take part in fiction by reading it, by viewing it. And in doing so we accept the "universe" we are being presented with. That said, to talk Trek, we must acknowledge that the universe it takes place in is an internally consistent construct. So we must also acknowledge replication tek (<--Shatner pun) nology.

<Jack Sparrow voice> Savvy?

Oh and there was that other problem of generally poor writing

Once again you've stumbled across a problem that is NOT singular to Voyager, but that applies broadly to Star Trek et al in tv/crappy film land.

You poor thing! I feel bad for you! You think Voyager is the nexus (<--? Wink) of literary shit in sf... Undecided

and a cast that hardly fired the imagination - when Kirk fooled those Romulan scallywags he had some devilish plan executed with flair, Janeways' 'target shields' was Voyager's equivalent

Better add Picard's, "open hailing frequencies" to the list. Chief O'Brian's coffee as well.

But chiefly, Star Trek is a mirror for todays society - its far less about tommorow than the casual fan would assume.

I must be a casual fan then. Because Star Trek's social commentary extends and broadens well into tomorrow as equally as it gives voice to the problems of today.

Voyager never even tried, it was TNG all over again and by the 7th series in looked tired, out of date, irrelevant and very much in the 'been there, done that' style

Is that good enough an answer?

No. You're a fart smeller, not a smart feller.
