yeah im s ure the ants go marching is a great song that is worth a listen.  just because a tiny bit of the song sounds the same (which i dont even know because i havent listened to it), doesnt mean that they copied.  im sure all 7 minutes and 42 seconds of civil war sound the same and have even worse lyrics than The Ants Go Marching (u can already tell its a great track because of the name)  yes

Isn't the Ants Go Marching taken from an old Civil War marching tune? So in effect then...... ?GNRs Civil War was stolen from the Ants Go Marching, which was taken from the Civil War. ?

It really only goes around in circles huh? hihi

So how does this work?

That is just proof that GNR stole that song and made it there own..

Whistling a wellknown song from the Civil War during the intro of a song called Civil War is hardly stealing the song.

Fuck, this has to be one of the stupidest threads ever - again. They really should release a new album, so maybe - just maybe - we could get rid of these kind of topics.

"They stole a song and made it their own"... I never use those stupid yellow ball thingys, but this one sure leaves me rolling on the floor.

By the way, you should wait 50 years (or is it even longer in USA?) before "stealing" Better. GNR waited long enough so they wouldn't get sued for copyrights!

Really?

Even if the whole mellody, that is based on the intro whistle, comes from an other song?

So you are telling me that if I put out a record at whistle the SCOM mellody and use it as my own throughout the song, I wouldnt be sued or anything?

It is fucking stealing

Do you pay royalties every time you sing Happy Birthday? ?Same concept. ?Its not copywrited any more so anyone can use it. ?

Do you know when the American civil war was? Do you know when Appetite For Destruction was released?

Do you need an explanation?  Roll Eyes

Maybe you can write a song based on Happy Birthday and your national anthem as well.

I know this is locked, but this is kind of interesting:

http://www.snopes.com/music/songs/birthday.asp

But traditional songs that have no known composers, or are more than x (not sure of the figure here) years old are not protected by copyright.
