The reason '02 notes are held longer is because he's singing entirely in head voice.. he's compressing it so as to not as let much air out. Usually when singers sing in head voice, their output becomes stronger, but I find that Axl's becomes weaker. It is all a matter of taste which tone you like though. The raspiness comes through today (and in the early days) is using a softer head voice, bordering on falsetto.. because of that he lets out a lot more air and can't hold the notes as long.

Nothing beats 1992 on that case.... Just pure rock n' roll.

And 2006 is way better then 2001 --> Axl really sounded like Mickey Mouse in those days.....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jf4lAubK13I&mode=related&search=......GREAT Nightrain, and Axl voice sounds great on it and YES ITS FROM 2002.

No way man... i thought it was horrible  Undecided well not horrible but... i didn't like it.

I think, the difference between 06' performance and 92' is because of the sound reproduction. I mean, it's better nowadays.
but no doubt axl's voice has changed.

http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=AF9DABD43E642ED8

i put together a comparison of clips from songs to show the difference in Axls voice from the different eras. In every clip, the order is 2006, off of Live Era, and 2001/2002.

its pretty sloppy, but it does the job

I would rank it 92, 06, 02.  That is both on singing terms, and general band coolness.

But in 02, who was the guy who looked like he was wearing a mask.  Not buckethead, i know who he is.  But the guy who looks EEEEVIL.

the only one who wore a mask was buckethead. maybe youre thinking of robin finck? he looked very goth and creepy back in 2002.

In terms of his voice, this would be my ranking:

1.) 1987 - 88
2.) 2006
3.) 1993
12313123187987.) 2002  drool

In terms of the band, as a whole:

1.) 2006
2.) 1991

Looking back at the RIR3 concert its really aa shame that his voice wasn't '06 material becuase the crowd looked energetic as fuck! Could you imagine that concert with the '06 voice?

Yeah. Imagine that crowd...at the Rock Am Ring-gig for example. RAR was one of the best GNR-gigs ever and the audience was boring as hell.

92>06>02. But Axl's voice was at it's best back in the late 80s.

2006 is by far the best, most exciting version out of those clips.   vocally and musically.

Comparing nightrain alone, i would say that it was at its best in 1993 when slash did the extended outro solo a la argentina. also 1988 was fucking awesome all together.

as far as the vocals go
88>93>06>92>02

as far as the solos go
93>02>88>92>06

axl sounds really fucking good these days, but ron's nightrain (remember i am ONLY talking about nightrain) is not as strong as slash's or buckets in my opinion

btw...this is the gnr i love the most (i know its not nightrain, but since everyone is posting heyday videos i figured wtf...) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fex7LU4-wdI

2006 sounds the best but you can't beat 1992 for all round performance.
