The only time I recall the phrase being used prior to 1992 was as the title of a Sonic Youth EP in 1983.

It was called "Kill Yr. Idols".

Other than that, well, the phrase is pretty self-explanitory.

Axl felt that way too. people idolized him and they were killing him in the press.
