Here Today...

« on: February 13, 2008, 08:01:55 PM »

I was reading an article where thieves are double dipping these days.  For example, when someone steals a car, they find personal information in the glove boxes. Car registration documents, proof of insurance cards, etc. often times contain SS# as well as Name, Address, Phone, number and so on.  So after stealing your car, they then use this info to steal your identity.  Man, this sounds like quite a racket.

My question, if you remove your car registration from car, what do you do if you get pulled over for speeding and the officer says, "License, registration, and proof of insurance please"?

Most registration documents are not small enough to carry in a wallet.

I'd say you have to spend some time in jail. If you do it happily you might avoid the tazer and/or beating.

Got an even better story: few years back, took the kid to a matinee, I think it was Spiderman 2. We come out and the car window was smashed in. I freaked, called the police, theater management, etc etc. Only later did I notice the scumbags had taken the garage door opener remote. Had the address from the car registration and insurance in the glove box. Got home to find  out I had been robbed as well. I fucking sued the company that owned the theater (one of the employees told me "this happens all the time") and made out ok after some very contentious letters. By the way, a witness got the license plate of the car that the thieves drove off in, and gave it to the police, who DID NOTHING, EVER.

I don't have an answer to the problem (whether or not to carry your documents with you) because there are penalities and fines if you don't have your paperwork. So this a problem that policy makers have to confront and solve.
