Review: Velvet Revolver Jan 20 2005

Gavin Allen, South Wales Echo

Cardiff International Arena

ANY stray Guns N' Roses fans who turned up at CIA hoping for a little nostalgia were given minimal succour by Velvet Revolver last night.

The supergroup ran right through their own album (not a crime exactly ...) but although the band's power and style smacked '92, Scott Weiland is very much his own (front)man.

For the most part he sweated about the stage without the aid of a T-shirt and did his best to throw some Johnny Rotten shapes but it just didn't feel right.

Slash adopted his trademark splayed leg stance but refused to wear that iconic hat until the encore and when the band did play some GNR numbers it was done with an evil grin. November Rain was first choice, the song closest to Axl Rose's heart and the biggest possible two fingers up to the former singer, along with the stunning It's So Easy.

In the end it was like glimpsing someone beautiful undressing through a gap in the door, thrilling and unfulfilling all at the same time but I'm glad I saw it.

No, this isnt true.  Odd that somebody would make up a story like this.

"Its So Easy" is never played as an encore, is it?

According to hspurs at the VR forum, heres the set-list.

Sucker train blues
Do it for the kids
Headspace
Superhuman
Illegal I
Crackerman
Dirty little thing
Fall to pieces
Big machine
Its so easy
Sex type thing
Set me free
Used to love her
You got no right
Drum solo (feat. you could be mine intro)
Mr. brownstone
Slither
Bodies

So the article is bullshit.

I know someone who was at the gig last night. When I next have the chance, I'll ask him, but I don't believe this at the moment...

What a bunch of crap - this guy obviously hasn't a clue.  I was there fucking fantastic awsome show.  DEFINATLY no November Rain!

They played the 3 GN'R songs superbly - with a little tease of YCBM in Matts drum solo(maybe one they are thinking of adding?) we'll see.

The crowd and the guys on the stage had a blast a fantastic show.

People really loved those guys they rocked their socks off.  Any of you out there who give any of these guys a hard time obviously haven't given them a chance.  They were fantastic.

I know a few people  who knew nothing about them, not particuarly stp/GNR fans either. But they were genuinly impressed and wouldnt lie otherwise you know?  so that was cool that they won over some new fans. Everybody i saw left that place smiling and saying how great it was.

Cheers to Velvet Revolver!  I want more now though... ok

i was at the gig, they didnt play november rain.
booker has the correct setlist up, WOW!!!! it was fuckin awesome, the band has a tremendous amount of energy onstage, fuckin rocked.
slash is larger than life, he got more cheers than scott ( which i feel is justified). even duff was lookin all buffed up.....scott now looks and performs like a proper rock n roll frontman...very very good live.
and dave was the suprise for me, he was brilliant, shitloads of energy and can really play the guitar, he played a couple of solo's as well.
overall, fuckin brilliant show, fuckin briliiant band.
oh, by the way, i got slash's pick when he threw it Cheesy Cheesy....so happy Cheesy
