Guns N' Roses Timeline

Date: 2004-08-12 Written by: Unregistered Category: The History Of

February 6, 1962 - William Bailey is born in Lafayette, Indiana. His stepfather's surname is Bailey, but he soon discovers his real fathers surname is Rose and Axl was a band he used to sing in. William will later change his name to Axl Rose, though some say the real story behind this is that Axl Rose is just a rearangement of oral sex.

April 8, 1962 - Jeff Isabelle is born in Lafayette, Indiana. He will later become known as Izzy Stradlin.

February 5, 1964 - Michael McKagan is born in Seattle, Washington. He is soon to be known as Duff.

January 22, 1965 - Steven Adler is born in Cleveland, Ohio.

July 22, 1965 - Saul Hudson is born in Stoke-On-Trent, England. At age 11 he moves to L.A. and will gain the nickname Slash.

By 1982, Steven, Izzy and Axl will have also moved to L.A. Duff was The Fastbacks' second drummer at age 16. He also played in the last version of the Fartz. The lineup changed alot over the years which introduced a new drummer which forced Duff to play guitar. They recorded an album's worth of material, unreleased, before they split at the beginning of 1985. Duff was, at this point, living in Seattle and was offered a place in an English band called Angelic Upstarts. By doing this he would have needed to move to England so he eventually declined the offer.

In 1984, Izzy joins a band called London. Axl Rose, together with friend Tracii Guns, forms the band L.A. Guns. Izzy's band London will soon start playing with Slash in their band.

In January 1985 Duff and his friend, Greg Gilmore, moved down to L.A. They started to answer ads and attending auditions together and somewhere down the line, Duff decided to start playing bass instead of guitar. When Duff answered an add one day, it led him to meet Slash and Steven Adler. Together they formed the band Road Crew. Whilst in this band, Slash came up with a riff that will soon be used in Paradise City. Greg Gilmore jammed with them for a while but soon moved back to Seattle.

March, 1985 - Axl Rose and Tracii Guns take their surnames to form the band Guns N' Roses. They take Izzy on board as second guitarist to Tracii. Before the name Guns N' Roses was chosen, the band rejected such names as Heads Of Amazon and AIDS. Rob Gardner becomes their drummer and bassist Duff is called in as he knew Slash who knew Izzy and so word was passed on.

June 6, 1985 - Duff uses his connections in Seattle to book gigs for the band. However, Tracii and Rob were not interested and so Duff asks if they can do the gigs with Slash and Steven. Axl agreed to this idea. And so the lineup was Axl, Izzy, Duff, Slash and Steven.

Guns N' Roses rehearsed for a couple of days and started The Hell Tour. However, the trip to Seattle was a disaster. After driving 100 miles their car broke down and they had to hitchhike. When they arrived in Seattle no one cared about them. Most of the shows had been cancelled and they only got $50 a show instead of the promised $250. Their first gig of the first tour was at the Omni Room where only 13 people saw them.

March 25, 1986 - GN'R signs with Geffen Records. Later the band starts to record their album at Rumbo Studios, but nothing gets done. Slash has problems with drugs and has to make a decision, drugs or the band. He choses the band.

August, 1986 - Tim Collins (Aerosmith's manager) was interested in managing the band but after they ordered drinks hotel bill, he changed his mind. Alan Niven is then hired as GN'R's manager and they begin recording the songs for "Appetite For Destruction".

June 15, 1987 - "It's So Easy" and "Mr. Brownstone" released by Geffen.

June 19, 22 & 29, 1987 - The band makes their European debut at the London Marquee. The first show is a disaster as it was on a Friday night and the crowd was very drunk. The press didn't help much by printing all kinds of sensational stories about them. A headline in the Star: "A rock band even nastier than the Beastie Boys is heading for Britain!"

August 1 & 2, 1987 - GN'R's first video, "Welcome To The Jungle", is shot.

End of 1987 - GN'R tour with Motley Crue. During this tour Slash and Steven Adler save the life of Motley Crue's bassist Nikki Sixx who had overdosed on drugs.

April 11, 1988 - The band shoots the video for "Sweet Child O' Mine" at Ballroom, Huntington Park, CA.

April 23, 1988 - "Appetite For Destruction" enters the Billboard Top 10.

May - June, 1988 - On tour with Iron Maiden. The two bands didn't get along very well. GN'R was the most popular band of the two. GN'R thought that they should headline instead of Iron Maiden. At the end of the tour Axl had problems with his throat. GN'R canceled the rest of the tour, but that didn't stop the rest of the guys from stepping on-stage and with jamming with LA Guns, who were hired to replace GN'R.

July 23, 1988 - "Appetite For Destruction" reaches #1 on the Billboard charts.

August, 1989 - Izzy is arrested for making a public disturbance (he urinated on the floor, verbally abused a stewardess and smoked in the non-smoking section) on a US Air flight.

April, 1990 - Dizzy Reed joins the band as a keyboard player.

July, 1990 - Steven Adler is fired. The band made an agreement with Steven which said that if he didn't stop taking drugs he was out. Steven failed to clean up and so was fired. He is replaced by Matt Sorum from The Cult.

August 19, 1991 - Show in Copenhagen, Denmark. The show went fine until somebody threw a firecracker onstage. Axl told the audience that they wouldn't continue the show until the idiot who did it turned himself in. After a 15-minute break the show continued.

October, 1991 - Steven Adler launched a lawsuit against the band. He claimed that GN'R were responsible for his drug addiction.

November 7, 1991 - Izzy Stradlin leaves GN'R and is replaced by Gilby Clarke.

October, 1992 - Izzy Stradlin And The Ju Ju Hounds releases their debut album on Geffen Records.

April 29, 1993 - Gilby breaks his left wrist in a motorcycling accident whilst on tour. In a panic, Axl calls Izzy who steps in for the first five shows. "Izzy and I grew up together and we're like a family in a lots of ways - including having our differences," comments Axl.

June 20, 1993 - A day-off. Sightseeing in Cologne. Slash and Gilby have dinner in an Italian restaurant. The owner is unaware of Slash's sense of humour and so is delighted when Slash, unimpressed by the meal, signs the visitor's book: "Of all the restaurants in the world, this is one!"

October 30, 1996 - Slash resigns due to his inability to cope with Axl's on-stage tantrums and the fact that Axl wanted to take the band in a new direction; making different styles of music. All Slash wanted was another rock album. These differences were not settled and so Slash felt he could no longer play with the band. He is replaced by Robin Finck.

August, 1997 - Duff quits GN'R. He's replaced by Tommy Stinson. Matt Sorum leaves some time early in the year and is eventually replaced by Josh Freese.

August 1st, 1999 - Robin Finck leaves GN'R.

March, 2000 - Josh Freese leaves GN'R. He's replaced by Brain.

October 27th, 2000 - Buckethead and Robin Finck are officially confirmed as guitarist by management.

March 30th, 2004 - A press release stating Buckethead has left the band is issued.

Fans now await the new Gun N' Roses album "Chinese Democracy".

What board timeline?  Huh

This is the message board part of the site. The site has also a history section as well as many other sections.

For some reason, some people seem to have problems separating the board and the rest of the site.  confused

Not to be too picky or anything, but I thought the St. Louis riot, the release of the Illusion albums, and mentioning some of their other famous videos should have been on there. Smiley

All this is a shorter, crappier (im my opinion) version of HTGTH's timeline. Except this timeline is missing more details. If you were to google there timeline it would bring up HTGTH as the first match. In school this would get a F for plagerism
