Post by: badapple81 on January 13, 2004, 11:06:03 PM

U only need to mention 14 years for me to appear (my fav song ever of any group)

14 years is indeed about Axl, and the bastard he is, the song tells u exactly how Izzy feels 'these last 4 years of madness/sure put me straight

Intrestingly enough 14 years is a combination of two songs, both Izzy and Axl wrote a song called '14 years' and they merged them together....

also Dead Horse is Axl's 'reply' to Izzy.......

Bullshit and contemplation
Gossip's their trade
If they knew half the real truth
What would they say
Well I'm past the point of concern
It's time to play
These last 4 years of madness
Sure put me straight

I think that part is about the press and GN'R becoming popular.

Wow.. would say Axl write the part aimed at the press..

Dead Horse is Axl's reply? Wow never knew this :)

Im assuming Axl realised this song was being aimed at him when he recorded this on the album?

Thats the big debate....i would guess he didn't, but who's to know...

If u listen to the lyrics of 'dead horse' its seems certainly aimed at Izzy (and probably some others too...)

This thread is cool! I never really knew what Dead horse was really about!

What do you guys think about my fave line in Dead Horse
"well i'm a son of a gun and a gun of a son... that brought the devil in me!"
I think maybe Axl's rubbing it in the fact he's boss around here, he calls the shots... if he wrote Dead Horse to reply to the others!

Two great songs- i wonder what Iz means when he says if they knew the real truth!  ???

I think he's talking about the press...and "what would they say" if they knew the real truth about what was going on internally at the time.

Not Stephany. Axl and Stephany started their relationship sometime in late 91. 14 years was officially released in sept 91...when izzy wrote the song Axl wasn't dating Stephany.

I don't think Dead Horse is about Izzy either. Dead horse is a song about Axl's natural father. I'm theorizing about this, but the song dead horse is meant to be a conversation between Axl and his real dad."Sick of this life, not that you care.." brought back the devil  in me","only a small child when the thought first came to me.." " son of a gun" This conversation obviously never takes place, it does in Axl's dreams/mind....

The Bridge part " I ain't quite what you call and old soul...." is a demonstration that Axl is little by little, becoming a man.

Anyway, those were my two cents on the song..

The years must have been from 87 to 91 maybe.

Remember: Izzy and Axl went to the same high school!
So it could of been before 87! Who knows!!!

Would be real cool if its true that Izzy wrote 14 Years about Axl; certainly sounds that way.  Especially when Axl and Izzy sing the chorus together, basically telling each other what they feel about the other.

Imagine how great it would be if Izzy showed up and sang 14 Years at one (or more) of the Hammerstein shows to sing 14 Years.  This time, the song would have a different twist in that the last 14 Years apart were just as painful as the 14 Years together.

www.gnrinfo.tk

Written by: "14 Years" was written by Izzy and Axl. Izzy wrote most of the song, and Axl wrote the lyrics to the chorus.
Written in: "14 Years" was written in or before 1990.

Performed live: "14 Years" was usually played on the beginning of the Illusions tour, when Izzy was still in the band. It was performed for the first time in LA, May 11, 1991.

Additional Information: The title 14 Years, probably relates to Axl's and Izzy's friendship. 14 Years - 1976-1990 they had known each other. That might explain why they both wrote a song titled "14 Years".

In Their Own Words

Izzy: Axl phoned me up and said he'd written a song called "14 Years" too, which is a really bizarre coincidence. So when he said that, I told him 'Well maybe we should use mine, 'cos it's already finished and we can get on with these fuckin' albums and get them out sometime in 1991!' So what we ended up doing was he heard mine, we tracked it, then he sang me parts of his song and made them like a bridge or a chorus or something.

I don't think Dead Horse is about Izzy either..

Pretty Tied Up is about a dominatrix woman (see gnrinfo.tk again) but there's also a verse about? GN'R

Once there was this rock n' roll band rollin' on the streets
Time went by and it became a joke
We just needed more and more fulfilling - Uh-huh
Time went by and it all went up in smoke

And the line I just found a million dollars that someone forgot really happened, Izzy found it in his pocked one day.

My favorite UYI tracks are the Izzy ones, and Dust 'N Bones is my favorite GN'R track.. it's got everything from a great rhythm, cool riffs and solos till lyrics that are weird, deep and funny at the same time.

I have to agree. Dust N' Bones is just a hell of a track.
